Special Chancellor W. W. E. Milice ordered Boyd's Place a Gate City highway near Kingsport closed citing moral harm to the neighborhood. The ruling noted no liquor sales since last May after owner Hugh Boyd admitted the fact.
Washington reports WPA raises of about 2.50 monthly after December 1 will offset job losses. Officials say the overhaul reduces rolls from 2,194,611 in July to about 1.9 million by September while the national average wage shifts from 63 to 55.50. Allentown Pennsylvania report details Margaret L Cowan a former nurse and sister of Louella Saeger who shot her 67 year old sister in a hospital room. Cowan claimed happiness at ending her sister's misery and told detective Chitatine she wanted to spare her sister further suffering. Hospital staff found Cowan kneeling beside the body placing flowers in her sister s hands. Cowan was jailed pending district attorney questioning.
Frits Kuhn testified before a house committee stating the German American Bund aims to form a new political party in the United States. He disputed remarks by Mason and Starnes calling the group a money making racket, outlining three objectives to unite German Americans, fight Communists, and provide political background, while denying antisemitic aims.
Senator Logan forecasts a possible loss of several Democratic seats in the 1940 elections. He notes a slim chance to oust Republicans Johnson of California and Barbour of New Jersey, lists Burke Nebraska Chavez New Mexico Donahue Ohio Gerry Rhode Island Guffey Pennsylvania Maloney Connecticut as vulnerable, and highlights Indiana where Minton seeks reelection.
