Pope Declares He Is Nominee In Primary Campaign

In Paris Tennessee Lewis Pope proclaims himself Democratic nominee and denounces frauds he says occurred in the August 4 primary. He criticizes party bosses and a conspiracy of power interests, naming banks utilities and city machines in Memphis and Nashville. Bodies of Cadets Returned to Port in Niobe Tragedy

The Niobe, a naval training ship, was dragged to Kiel with 69 cadets' bodies recovered after sinking July 26. Divers worked through wreckage to retrieve remains for burial in a joint ceremony, as grieving families watched from shore.

Taylorville braces for attack by striking miners

In Taylorville Illinois on August 17 a woman in a car was shot and wounded by Christian County deputies guarding highways against a threatened invasion by striking coal miners from downstate and Springfield. The incident occurred as the group returned from Springfield with a 7 year old child. Deputies attempted to stop the car, fearing evasion. Roosevelt Interrogates Walker Aide Over Sherwood Case

Governor Roosevelt pressed Mayor Walker aide Charles Kerrigan on why Sherwood the missing accountant was not produced. Noland Accused of Bribery in Lea Bank Case Trial

In Asheville North Carolina on August 17 Wiley Noland Haywood county farmer was cited by state witness H L Justice as saying Colonel Luke Lea authorized a bribe offer for a favorable jury report in Lea and Lyle Lea Jr bank fraud trials. July trade balance shows large favorable margin

The Commerce Department reports July exports exceeded imports by 29 million dollars, the largest favorable balance of the year. June posted three million and July 1931 six million dollars.

Gasoline Tax Office Guard Battle Sparks Court Fight

Nashville August 17 The comptroller Roy Wallace was blocked by a court order from taking control of the gasoline tax office and an armed guard remained at the door. George Dempster, finance and taxation commissioner, disputes jurisdiction and will press for a permanent ruling. Highway patrolmen once guarded the office, then were withdrawn as Wallace called the move absurd. The dispute centers on the seven cent gasoline tax and its collection. The office was guarded today by Patrolman J H Duncan on Dempster’s orders.

Lindberghs Shun Public Attention As Baby Born
