A Sullivan County 4-H newsletter recalls a morale boosting note from Jane Snodgrass and promotes Appalachian District Fair entries due by noon Aug 24. It lists entry categories from crops and fruits to crafts and clothing, and credits 4-H leaders and campers for a successful Junior Camp week.
Wise County apple growers anticipate a large harvest as about 400000 bushels are expected from the 1985 crop. An orchard tour near Wise included County Agent Dr. Drake VPI plant pathologists Dr. Huston Couch and Charles Drake and Virginia Apple Commission official Purcell McCue. They urged spraying to curb insects, picking best fruit first to avoid overripe apples, and utilizing research from VPI to improve future yields.
Sears Gate City Va report shows Scott County farms nearly quadrupled limestone applications from 189 through 1964 with about 2300 tons used in 1959 and 8100 tons in 1964 after a spike in 1962. The 1964 ACP listed practices include permanent cover established on 134 farms and 522 acres, lime on 4 farms and 736 acres, contour stripcropping, forest and grassland improvements, wildlife habitat planting, and water pipelines. Tobacco allotments covered 4698 acres with 2,479.88 harvested, yielding 5,689,267 pounds, down from 193- but among the seven-year high. Excess tobacco destroyed on 295 farms. wheat diversion paid $529.16 to 21 farms for 30 diverted acres. Wool sales totaled $3,815.95 with incentive payments of $991.96. lamb payments, $205.49 on 42,748 pounds.
County Agent J W McClain announces a 730 p m meeting at the Farm Bureau building in Blountville to explain a new forage testing program. Br William A Miller of the UT Extension Service will lead discussions, detailing the forage testing lab setup and personnel training for silage and hay testing. All livestock producers and others interested in livestock production are invited.
The Tri State Guernsey Association hosts an all day event at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Purebred Sales Pavilion Bristol to Abingdon Highway U S 11 with junior and open classes plus showmanship and best fitted animals. Trophy and cash premiums are offered by the association and Bristol Chamber of Commerce while Bayville Farms judge Al MacKay oversees judging. Show committee chairman Wayne Perrigan and Bristol official Conley Baker are arranged for duties.
Sullivan County agent Charles C Holland warns harvest time danger from corn pickers and other machines. Most injuries occur when operators adjust or unclog running equipment. He urgespreharvest checks, secure feeding, safe speed, and to stop engine power take off dismount and lock brakes before adjustments.
Kingsport owner P J Shivell reports the registered Guernsey cow Heavy Miliker Shy Valley B Southern Lass completed an official DHER production record with 12 420 pounds of milk and 587 pounds of fat in Moh days per the American Guernsey Cattle Club.
Mrs. Mary C. Duncan, 75, of 4710 S Wilcox Drive, says Pharse Williams, 70, of 1618 Sevier Ter Eate Drive owes her $10 after boasting he had the area’s tallest tomato vine. Williams shows a 10-foot vine in his front yard with 75 tomatoes averaging one pound each. Duncan set four plants by her woodshed in May and began picking tomatoes in July. she has not kept count, but admires the fruit.
