Hoover Reports Startling Rise in Crime Rates in 1980
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover announced a 9 percent rise in the national crime rate for the first half of 1980 based on a survey of cities with 25 000 or more residents. Murders up 6 percent and rapes 5 percent with assault up 4 percent. The West showed the sharpest increases in violence 19 percent and property crimes 15 percent. Robberies up 13 percent, burglaries 12 percent, and articles worth more than 30 rose 8 percent. New England alone saw a property crime drop. The total property loss reached 134 million dollars.

Reeves Bound Over Without Bond In Slaying
Paul Reeves, 18, bound over to Criminal Court without bond after a preliminary hearing in the rifle slaying of Neil H. Lyon, 42, found in a ditch near his Hawkins County home. Reeves pleaded not guilty to first degree murder. Lyon was shot in the neck and struck on the head. Reeves was arrested Friday after officers found the victim's stolen car and he reportedly admitted the crime.

Two Women Appointed To Patrol Force In Nashville
Davidson County sheriff-elect Leslie Jatt named 82 new patrol recruits with Geneva Reardon and Mrs Dial among the appointed matrons. The move marks the first time women hold juvenile officer and jail courthouse observer posts, and will affect confinement of federal women prisoners. A two week patrol training school with 35 courses began under local law enforcement officials and judges. In Paris, the government approved a five billion dollar urban development plan to handle rapid population growth, to be completed in 25 years.

City Court Action Fines and warrants in drunkenness and speeding cases
City Court today fined six men $20 each for public drunkenness and forfeited a $97.50 bond for failure to yield to a motorist. Two others forfeited $5 bonds for passing stop signs, three warrants issued for failure to appear, one person fined $10 for speeding, two warrants for speeding, one $5 fine for running a red light, two $2.50 fines for illegal parking, and several overtime parking forfeitures.
