Montgomery August 16 five Scottsboro defendants faced pardon pleas before Gov Ellen Graves and the State Pardon Board. The five have been imprisoned since March 1951 when a white woman and four others were accused of a mass rape. Four inmates are serving long terms for raping Mrs Victoria Price. the fifth is serving eight years for using a deputy sheriff during an escape attempt. Morris Shapiro of New York, secretary of the Scottsboro defense committee, filed a 24 page brief supporting the petitions. Osmond K. Fraenkel also seeks unconditional pardon and immediate release for the defendants. Circuit Judge W. W. Callahan cited a statement declaring guilt in the case. See SCOTTSBOROUGH Page 8.
Senator Murray of Montana declared support for President Roosevelt if he seeks a third term, citing Western backing for continuity. Senator McKellar of Tennessee dismissed the idea as mere talk and said he never favored a third term.

A letter traveling 23 miles from Jennson City to Kingsport took 235 days to arrive. Ed and Mrs. Harkins found the 18 7 Christmas greeting dated December 23 6 30 p m with Johnson City marks. They say the mailman had not seen it in the box since that time and postal authorities are puzzled by the delay.
In Waycross and nearby towns Senator Walter F. George defended his seat against Roosevelt aligned forces as the Democratic primary nears on Sept. 14. He declared Georgia cannot be bought by the New Deal or outside interests, urged party freedom, and vowed to repulse efforts to unseat him. Opponents Camp and Talmadge argued George faces a federal push and warned against his presidential prospects. The battle centers on loyalty, policy, and Georgia’s choice in a hot campaign.
Across the globe, Chiang Kai-Shek reportedly massed 1,000,000 troops to defend Hankow while in Spain government and rebel air fleets clash over Catalonia. In China battles rage along the Yangtze and Waikiang fronts with shifting gains near Red Lake and Kiukiang. The gasoline tax history cites Oregon first adoptting the levy in 1819 and later widespread adoption.
In New York the Hines trial speeds up jury selection for the 100 million a year policy racket. Four more paroles were accepted within an hour as jurors were questioned in groups of 12 to complete the Blue ribbon jury by this afternoon.
Washington reports presidential approval of 80 additional public works applications raising the program total to 4 090 across the nation. The compiled figure now stands at 1 008 652 694 dollars in construction funding as of August 18.

New York City hits 93.1 F, Washington sees 95.4 F as heat provokes outages and crop concerns while scattered thunderstorms offer limited relief. Coolest spot east of the Rockies is Eastport Maine at 58 F. In Grayson Kentucky an examining trial is set for Wreck Mobley after his wife died from gunshot wounds Friday.
In Memphis on August 16, a $25,000 damage suit was filed in federal court against Sheriff W. J. Vaughan of Covington Tennessee. It alleges dereliction of duty in the lynching of Albert Gooden who was killed after six masked men seized Vaughan’s car during transfer from a Memphis jail. The case was brought by Gooden's sister Mary Gnorier Patterson.
Knoxville August 16 A witness testified before a congressional committee that George Collins of Frankfort Kentucky, an associate of Senator George L Berry in marble and mineral leases, claimed Berry would settle TVA claims soon and A G Morgan would be out. The affidavit read described discussions linking Lilienthal and Morgan to the removal.
Washington Aug 16 The senate campaign expenditures committee may ask Senator Guffey to account for a mailing list used to solicit Pennsylvania campaign donations. The probe focuses on a Philadelphia newspaper report that a request to Democratic officials labeled fellow Democrats was sent.
Two convicts were captured in Minnesota's North Woods for kidnapping a St. Louis couple. District Attorney Victor Anderson filed Lindbergh law charges. Meredith was seriously wounded. Couch held in jail. Miss Peggy Gross and Daniel Cox Fahey Jr. were abducted in St. Louis, their car used to flee.
In a fatal sequence of routine maneuvers two Navy bombers crashed during night landings off San Diego bay. Five fliers died and four were injured as wreckage sank, with two crewmen killed in a separate Camp Kearny crash. One bomber damaged after forced bay landing left one crew unhurt. several identified victims and survivors listed as authorities sort names.
