In Coaldort Pennsylvania a deadly mine explosion killed fifteen workers while rescuers and managers battled to reach survivors. Officials reported many bodies recovered late at night and a lone miner in the shaft exhausted as rescue efforts continued.

Ageton of Flushing, N.Y., died. The four were taken aboard the tanker Ligonier, bound for Port Arthur, Texas, as coast guard crews investigated. Details on the crash and injuries were not released. The plane had been en route from Havana to Key West and reportedly sank shortly after rescue.

In Bay St. Louis Mississippi on August 16 a large posse pursued a black man described as Silas Richardson, blamed for killing John Camberine and wounding Police Chief Mark Oliver. A 100 man search, mounted guards, and bloodhound patrols covered Devil's Lake swamp as authorities offered 590 dollars for the capture. A separate note mentions Louise Groody being rescued after a pool diving miscalculation.
Ashville North Carolina August 16 By a jury verdict G Wallace Bryant cousin of Mrs Henry Ford today won a $50 000 damages award against Henry Westall Asheville clubman for wrecking his home The jury found Bryant suffered $39 000 in actual damages and $12 000 punitive The defense may seek to set aside the verdict at a later hearing and the trial featured sensational testimony including Bryant charging a conspiracy to ruin his home and breach of an implied attachment
The Georgia Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of Eva Blrod Thompson, an accomplice in the Coleman Osborne murder. Her husband had been executed days earlier, and a confession alleged innocence for him. Governor Thirdman denied clemency. Jim Maas, also convicted, died with him. Osborne was killed August 5, 1927, after being called from his home to enter the Chatasworth store at night.
After two months of guerilla warfare two thousand diamond prospectors who became bandits when paid in counterfeit money have been driven from Matto Grosso into Guyaz. The Guyaz governor disarmed them and promised peaceful conduct then allowed them to work in the diamond fields. Ten thousand vig ilantes under Jose Morsback forced their exile. Reports say fights occurred in jungle and upland areas with town burnings and civilian losses.
Western North Carolina faced a historic flood with rivers rising over banks from Asheville to surrounding counties. Rainfall reported 4.16 inches in 24 hours. many rivers swollen, bridges washed out, and manufacturing plants at risk. No deaths reported. search and damage assessments underway.
