Harr's Herd Leads July DHIA Output in Sullivan County
B R Harr's herd of 17 cows topped Sullivan County Dairy Herd Improvement Association in July with 1292 pounds of milk and 47.7 pounds of butterfat per cow. Z W McClain reports. Other high producers include W J Allen, F W Stickley and Son, and B A and R W Jones. One Jones cow produced 2500 pounds of milk, with Fleenor and Thomas herds also among top performers. Butterfat leaders include Harr, Shivell, Jones, Allen, Stickley and Son, Massengill, Cedar Creek Farm, Mills, Glover, Perigan, Simpson, Dishner, Thomas, Fleenor, and C W Fleenor.

Clean Suckering Boosts Burley Yields and Value
A five year study at Southwest Experiment Station Glade Springs shows clean or close suckering of burley tobacco yields more per acre and higher values than looser suckering. Nitrogen rates tested 50 to 200 pounds per acre. clean suckering increased yields by about 297 to 372 pounds and profits by 88 to 128 dollars per acre, though may reduce leaf quality and require more labor.

County 4 Hers Claim Two State Championships
Sullivan County 4 H delegates captured two state championships and a second place at the State 4 H Club Roundup in Knoxville last week. Jerry Hite won a trip to the National 4 H Congress in Chicago for first place in the garden project and holds a King College scholarship as the county’s outstanding 1959 4 H boy. His mother Mrs Flossie Hite and the Rock Springs farm run accompany him. Lou Ann McCulley placed second in bread baking and earned a $50 bond. Tom Bellamy won first in the junior forestry record book and also drew a $50 bond.

In Celina Tennessee Amos Osgathorpe, Clay County Election Commission chair, and Walter V. Spear, Celina businessman, were bound over for grand jury on election law violations.
