City council moved to issue bonds totaling 140727.19 to fund water works extensions, sewers, sidewalks, and street work in districts 70 72 and 73 with bonds issued over 20 years. The sale is set for September 4 and includes city and owner financed portions.
Tennessee and Virginia see generally fair conditions with little temperature change tonight and Thursday. In Tennessee, high yesterday reached 12 with no noted change. Virginia expects partly cloudy skies with possible showers in the north. Rain yesterday totaled 1.82 inches, versus 0.37 inches a year ago. Readings taken at 6:00 p.m. for the preceding 24 hours.
Ohio former governor A V Donahey won the Democratic nomination for US Senate over Charles West and George White with Simeon D Fess renominated on the Republican ticket Nebraska Governor Bryan apparently defeated in the Democratic senatorial contest by Th Burke Robert G Simmons won the Republican race for US senator Arkansas Governor Futrell renominated for a second term while C Ben Ross led the Democratic gubernatorial race the bitter Ohio primary campaign noted.
Toronto police report a $150,000 ransom demand in the John Labatt kidnapping. Hugh Labatt arrived from London after the abduction, stating no ransom payment yet though it was reported he drew $150,000 from a London bank. Police say breaks are being pursued by Ontario and Toronto forces as details remain under wraps.
In Chicago Aug 15 AP reports a $250,000 damage suit filed by C. W. Larsen against Secretary Ickes. Larsen, one of two Chicago lawyers involved in recent disbarment actions alleged Ickes tried to "blackmail" him for federal jobs. Ickes denied misusing remarks and said Larsen cited statements from the disbarment proceedings.
Donald Campbell, a 20 year veteran driver for a Columbus trucking firm, lies near Mt Gilead Ohio in the tenth day of what doctors call talking sickness a form of encephalia with alternating sobs laughter and rambling speech. Dr. G S Jackson reports he remains rational but weakening rapidly with only five hours sleep since onset.
Albert Tester, 39, the Holiness evangelist from Cullowhee Mountain, remains willing to let venomous snakes bite him to prove faith’s healing power only if he receives a divine message. He returned to his flock near Charlotte after a rattlesnake episode and plans to scatter the word of God, weighing offers for revival work.
Stephen J. McDonough reports from Washington that the AAA seeks to curb middlemen through licenses to control processors and distribution if food prices rise, while Senator Byrd opposes expanding AAA power. Mrs. Gifford Pinchot of Harriman urges removing the blue eagle from Harriman Mills and calls for NRA official Glancy to go, amid labor unrest and a stalled agrarian reform fight.
Havana awaits Batista reply to Saenz challenge amid a duel prospect. Saenz, a scholar of politics and finance, accuses Batista of a heated dispute. In Muskogee, Oklahoma, 14-year-old Clinton Hayes leads a counterfeiting ring with high school classmates using improvised molds and foundry work. one boy testifies and names the others as co conspirators.
Senator Huey P. Long escalates a political clash in Louisiana by pressing a steamroller strategy to police New Orleans. In a split House vote, lawmakers refused to suspend rules for rapid bills, while Long and Governor Allen push a 12 day session with more than two dozen measures expanding state oversight of city government. The move follows court injunctions and tension over the Orleans registration office as Long supports a broader drive to curb local autonomy.
United Textile Workers of America voted to send a three member committee to Mayor LaGuardia to protest police clubbing of striking knit goods workers in Brooklyn. Thomas McMahon denounced brutalities by light infantry and mounted brigade after about 200 strikers clashed with police in front of Commodore Knit Goods Corporation as they refused to disperse.
Berlin August 15 The dead hand of Reichs President Paul von Hindenburg is cited in Hitler's drive for renewed popular support. A political will dated May 11, 1984, signed by von Hindenburg, praises Hitler and the movement. Von Papen delivered the document to Hitler at Berchtesgaden en route to Austria. He thanks fellow Germans for aiding Germany's resurgence and notes Hitler's decisive historical stride.
Brooklyn August night scene at Prospect Park where Fiorella La Guardia, now Mayor and maestro, conducts Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever with Edwin Franko Goldman’s band before about twelve thousand in a highly praised rendition. The mayor, recalled for bows, inspires unity despite any prior political differences among the musicians.
Nashville Aug 15 Republicans and a Democratic faction that lost the August 2 primary push a fusion plan. The GOP executive committee sought cooperation to elect Ben Hooper to the U S Senate and Pope or a Pope supporter to the Tennessee governorship. Maddox and McCall withdrew, Bachman left unopposed to finish Hull’s term. Hooper announced his Senate bid from the Smokies to the Mississippi River, while Maddox backs Hooper and Pope. Pope gave no comment.
