The airship R100 set a record from Montreal to Vancouver by crossing the Atlantic, carrying 13 passengers and 44 crew with one motor out of commission. Despite a handicap the vessel hoped to finish in about 50 hours, arriving in Three Rivers before crossing to Quebec.
Captain Frank M Hawks landed at Curtiss field after clocking 12 hours 25 minutes 3 seconds for an eastward transcontinental flight, the fastest over 2 500 miles. He referenced Lindbergh’s 14 45 00 record and noted refueling stops at Daguerue N M Wichita and Indianapolis. Col Lindbergh praised the achievement and Hawks planned to fly to Chicago for national races starting August 22.
AP reports from Aug 13–14 detail the R-100 airship voyage with crew pumping Caul into tanks to extend the flight. The British airship showed high hopes of beating prior eastward Atlantic records, near Belle Isle and Montclare, as reports continued across page six.

Berlin reports bands of women Lhuns engage in robbery against tired businessmen returning home after evening diversion. One case cites Wilhelm Rupe, 59, beaten and robbed by four women. In West Virginia, three men and a dog allegedly ran a still, surrendering to authorities after a note tied to the dog’s neck indicated jail.
Miss Hattie Shackleford, Red Cross nurse, has been elected commander of the American Legion post in Tarboro North Carolina. The announcement came from the post in Eason.

Horace A. Mann, southern campaign manager for Hoover in 1928, moves to build a permanent Republican organization in the South based on principle not patronage. The group will use radio, literature and newspapers for an aggressive educational campaign and aims to give southern political thought a formal outlet.
Elmer Tilton and his son Louis were shot to death on a farm near Toledo while stealing potatoes to feed Tilton’s seven dependents. Lester Coy, 25, on guard with a gun, killed the pair after crops were repeatedly pilfered from the farm run by Coy.
In St Louis a radio message from endurance fliers Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine said they expect to be aloft next year if weather holds. They regained the world endurance record at 576 hours, flying near Lambert Field. They aim for 1,000 hours, with officials noting NAA rules require returning to their field. Other figures and backers sent congrats as the record stood. Meanwhile in Arkansas a prosecutor in Pulaski County was disbarred for unprofessional conduct amid the primary race.
Naples Italy August 1402 a tornado struck the agricultural market area on the eve of a feast, killing four and injuring 70 to 80 as crowds surged toward hospitals. The Romeo Aeronautical Works wall collapse trapped victims, while police and firemen cleared debris. Cardinal Archbishop ordered Te Deumy of Thanksgiving in churches tomorrow due to the apparent escape from the previous earthquake.
Nashville dispatch reports a car carrying five people left on a Florida vacation trip when it struck a post less than an hour after starting. One passenger, Mrs J W Thomaille, died shortly after the collision and two others were seriously hurt. The accident occurred near Nashville as the party traveled south.
Mil ton Rodgers 22 reports three unidentified black men seized his female companion Viola Edwards of Elizabethton North Carolina after luring her for a ride near Raleigh. An auto tailed them to Garney six miles out. a pistol shot was fired as she was dragged away. No trace found.

Governors and representatives from twelve states met President Hoover in Washington to plan immediate drought relief. The session followed forecasts of rain and included discussion of large scale measures and an official relief program. Freight rate cuts and price monitoring were outlined to ease farmer hardship. Weather forecasts promised more showers as the talks continued.
