R100 Making Good Hawks Clip Record Flight West to East

The airship R100 set a record from Montreal to Vancouver by crossing the Atlantic, carrying 13 passengers and 44 crew with one motor out of commission. Despite a handicap the vessel hoped to finish in about 50 hours, arriving in Three Rivers before crossing to Quebec.

Hawks Sets Eastwest Transcontinental Flight Record

Captain Frank M Hawks landed at Curtiss field after clocking 12 hours 25 minutes 3 seconds for an eastward transcontinental flight, the fastest over 2 500 miles. He referenced Lindbergh’s 14 45 00 record and noted refueling stops at Daguerue N M Wichita and Indianapolis. Col Lindbergh praised the achievement and Hawks planned to fly to Chicago for national races starting August 22.

Record of the R-100 Airship Flight Across Atlantic

Crop thieves killed near Toledo on a farm

Elmer Tilton and his son Louis were shot to death on a farm near Toledo while stealing potatoes to feed Tilton’s seven dependents. Lester Coy, 25, on guard with a gun, killed the pair after crops were repeatedly pilfered from the farm run by Coy.

In St Louis a radio message from endurance fliers Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine said they expect to be aloft next year if weather holds.
