Trenton Texas August reports show Burger Reed attempted multiple methods to remove bees from a wall. after three years a wall section was torn out revealing a honey slab five feet high and measuring twenty two inches by four inches. Other items note streamlining the army and regional political events.
Partly cloudy tonight and Saturday with little temperature change in Tennessee. Light and Saturday for Virginia but change likely. Cloudy conditions in Kentucky with clear spells tonight and Saturday, slightly warm in parts.
HIARRISSURY Pa Aug 11 Arthur H James says he is not a candidate for next year's regional presidential nomination but would not refuse if urged. The red headed governor once a county judge recalls wishing to be a coal miner breaker boy and notes a Texas friend calls James and Vice President Garner ideal nominees for both parties.
Hollywood reports Ford Sterling, once a Keystone Kop star and top film comedian, has endured an 18 month hospital stay and a recent leg surgery. Even as illness and poverty shadow his health, friends note his cheerful spirit and enduring comedic charm that once propelled him to fame with Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand in New York.
President Roosevelt signed a bill broadening Social Security Act provisions and trimming hundreds of millions from the tax burden. The changes convert old age insurance to survivors and family protection, extend unemployment insurance to more workers, and promise greater benefits early on. An expert committee was urged to study further security act proposals. Taxes are frozen for three years, saving an estimated 905 million dollars, with rates retained at 1 percent for employees and 4 percent for employers through January 1, 1943.
Baton Rouge, Aug 11. A second violent death shadowed LSU as the probe into the school controversy deepened. George C Heidelberg, 60, secretary of the student employment committee, shot himself as investigators moved through campus. His wife was secretary to Dr James Monroe Smith, former president at the center of indictments and resignation that rocked the university. Heidelberg appeared troubled over a threatening letter XN accusing someone connected to the fund probe.
A bevy of stage and screen stars entered to hear judgment by nine AFL executive council members. AFL President William Green promised a verdict today after days of strenu ous sessions. The crisis centers on the Associated Actors and Artistes of America suspending the American Federation of Astors.
In Daikland California a 72 year old blind woman, Florence Nethercot t erec ot, was found crying in a chair as police uncovered her 76 year old husband George Nethercott dead in another room. Neighbors reported they had not seen the couple since Friday and the husband had been ill but refused hospital aid, leaving the wife unaware of his death until early today.
Pittsburgh August 11 Senator Barkley of Kentucky told the Young Democrats the Republicans have no issue and search in darkness for one. He reaffirmed the New Deal party line, denounced GOP plans, and said relief and spending have kept employment and that Roosevelt would not back a conservative for the nomination. Three persons were treated at Community hospital for injuries from two traffic accidents. A 12 year old, Richard Dickson, was minorly injured after being struck on Maple and Oak streets by a car driven east on Maple, investigation by Patrolman Jim Broyles.
Britain announced that four Chinese alleged terrorists would be handed over to Japanese authorities for trial after new evidence established prima facie cases.
