Feeding Out Beef Steers Could Boost Farm Income

Tennessee farmers may raise income by feeding out beef steers and heifers for slaughter says Dr. Q Glen Hall UT associate professor of animal husbandry at the Tobacco Experiment Station. Feed experiments show net gains per head over costs, with full feeding for extra days improving finish and quality. Alfalfa weevil control achieved on about 90 percent of acres. remaining failures tied to improper insecticide use or fertilizer misapplication. Recommendations include soil testing, proper lime and fertilizer, seeding with proven varieties, and avoiding cutting alfalfa after Sept 1 to store reserves.

Cleveland reports a record 24 million board feet of sawlogs and pulpwood cut from the Cherokee National Forest in the fiscal year ending. The Forest Supervisor announced the largest previous cut was 19 million board feet during WW II recovery. Kingsport patrol logs show four traffic accidents Sunday with two injuries. One crash occurred at 6:49 PM on US Take Crest Road in Washington County and another at 4:15 PM on US 3 in Colonial Heights near Take Crest Road. Union Expected To Ask Judge To Dismiss Suits

CHATTANOOGA AP The United Mine Workers plan to ask a judge to dismiss royalty suits against Southeast Tennessee gas operators. Lawyers for both sides say field performance has convinced them the fund will seek dismissal of the suits. The suits claimed operators shorted 40 cents per ton mined as royalties under UMW contracts.
