Hazard Negro Facing Chair After Midnight

James Lee Robertson alias Wildman, 26, of Hazard Kentucky, convicted in Fayette circuit court of rape and murder, faces execution after midnight for the May assault and slaying of Bertha Lehman, a 26 year old from Kingsport Tennessee, with fourteen witnesses including Sheriff Cornett testifying. The case was moved from Perry county and the trial lasted six hours. Robertson admitted the crime, and a last minute clemency bid was not granted.

First U S treason verdict man faces hanging

Max Stephan, a German born American citizen, is to be hanged on November 14, 1942, in Milan Michigan federal prison after a federal court found him guilty of aiding the flight of a Nazi flyer from Canadian camps. Judge Arthur J. Tuttie declared the sentence, calling the case a harsh wartime necessity. Governor Van Wagoner declined to intervene.
