Republicans sweep Sullivan county offices after upset

In Sullivan county's fourth consecutive Republican surge, Roby Milam won the sheriff race by 787 over Democrat E M Cross, Worley Fain gained the county surveyor post, Roy E Clarke swept the school superintendent contest while Ward Gardaner led for highway commissioner. The GOP carried four key seats, a historic first for this East Tennessee stronghold, amid fallout from a poll tax fraud scandal and a wave of party unity.

Seismographs Record Two Quakes Far Abroad

New York reporters note Fordham University seismographs logged two sharp earthquakes 4,200 miles away at 4 04 and 4 18 a m BST today. Seismologist Rev Father Joseph J Lynch said he could not determine the quake directions.

GOPS Sweep Votes In Hawkins County Races

Hawkins county Republicans swept three of six county offices in unofficial returns. I D Price defeated Mrs Reardon by 1091 votes, Lowe re elected sheriff John H Howe beat Tom Barton by 880, E A Cape won school superintendent by 589. Minor Barker and Klepper elected without opposition to trustee circuit clerk and register. Testerman defeated Blanken for direct representative by about 400 votes.

Showalter Ahead in Officer's Race

Unofficial returns from two of three wards in the 11th civil district favor W. N. Showalter for constable over five opponents. Showalter led with 644 votes in two wards, compared to Deputy Sheriff W. L. Frazier with 415. Other candidates: Barlley 52 votes, Bralley 87, Brown 102, Bussell 19. South ward results awaited but not expected to change the outcome. Showalter, a former Singsport police officer, is widely known and seen as a strong choice.

Vote Cast in Sullivan County Races Sets Records

A total of 9401 votes were cast in Sullivan county in yesterday's general election, the highest in county history. Roby A. Milan won the sheriff's race by a narrow margin for the Republican column, while Ward Gardner led the highway commissioners contest defeating a Democratic opponent. The Democratic state primary drew over 6600 votes, with the governor's race atop the totals, and Kingsport outpaced Bristol by about a thousand votes.

Buckles Wins Narrow Victory Over Chase in Local Race

Sullivan and Hawkins counties voters returned Brooks Buckles to the senate with a slim Hawkins County margin of 38 votes and a statewide tally of 4 093. In Sullivan Buckles led after a late surge as Hawkins slipped away. John Ed O'Dell won renomination for direct representative while William L Moore appears to have beaten John D Hamilton in a tight Sullivan Hawkins contest.

Byrns Jr Leading For Seat In House

In Nashville Aug 5 1928 Joseph W Byrns Jr led for the Democratic nomination to the seat long held by his father and once held by Richard M Atkinson. Early returns show Byrns ahead in Davidson County with 5455 to 7628 for Atkinson. Other incumbents Renominated include Sam D McReynolds Herrold Pearson and Clarence Turner. Republican incumbents Reece and Taylor unopposed. Albert Gore gains lead in 4th district as Ridley Mitchell leaves seat.

Officers Report Unusual Quiet During Election

Despite tension and wide interest in the county election and Democratic state primary, city police and county officers reported unusual order. In Sullivan county and Kingsport precincts no disturbances were reported and no arrests were made. Early this morning the city jail was nearly empty aside from preexisting inmates.

Bushmaster Lays Egg at Museum for First Time

In New York at the American Museum of Natural History a Bushmaster laid an egg, the first time such an event has been observed in captivity. Officials expect more eggs, possibly 10 to 15, with hatchlings to follow. The Bushmaster ranks second to the King Cobra among large venomous snakes.

Crump Leads After Tennessee Democratic Primary

Returns from the Tennessee Democratic gubernatorial primary show Prentice Cooper leading Governor Gordon Browning by large margins. Cooper tops Browning by over 25,000 votes with Stewart well ahead of Berry. Crump ally Pete Hudson wins the public utilities contest in Clarksville. Local Shelby County results favor Cooper heavily, while Browning faced a potential dramatic setback as votes continued to come in.

Cherokees Fall in Final to Red Sox in Series

Cherokees lose the final game of the series to the Red Sox, dropping two and a half games behind Elizabethton. The Red Sox win three of four in the current series, with one game ending in a tie. Cherokees return home for a series with the Newport Cann ers, with first pitch at 5 15 p.m.
