Japanese authorities claim air bombardment routed Chinese forces near Peiping and opened a southern advance route for Japanese troops from the captured Manchurian capital. They report Chinese troops fled at Faseingfu, 84 miles south, as Japanese planes intensified assaults.
Alfred P. Sloan Jr of General Motors led 1936 executive pay among SEC reporting firms with 561 0 0. a 411 162 bonus boosted his total. William Knudsen and Charles Kettering also figure among top earners. Goens Inc president Nicholas M. Schenck and several film stars round out high pay in other sectors.
Weather outlook shows showers tonight in Tennessee and Kentucky with a slight warmup in northern sections. Virginia turns partly cloudy with showers in the southeast Thursday and west and north areas late tonight into Thursday with warmer readings in the west.
Albert Lea dispatch reports Trens Thompson, accused of slayings of the Lukes brothers, eluded pursuers for 12 days in backwoods country before being captured. CHICAGO Aug 4 PI Assistant State's Attorney Wilbert F Crowley said a 30 month old boy Donald Horst was found at the west side home of John Regan 26 and his wife Lydia 25. They admitted taking the child while Mrs Horst struggled to stop it. Police said a ransom call was claimed but the Regans denied making it. The baby was born Jan 6 1935 to Mrs Regan who believed the arrangement temporary. The birth certificate listed the Horsts as natural parents. The case centers on a doctor arranging for the child and statements by the chauffeur Ewert and Mrs Regan following the recovery.

Rogersville Tenn August 4 Up Until the state supreme court acts on an injunction the Hawkins county school board cannot appoint teachers forcing hundreds of pupils to miss reading writing and arithmetic If the court does not rule when it meets in Knoxville next month the schools may not open until after the first of the year County court chairman C F Lauderback said the muddled situation traces to July 1946 when four board members were dismissed on misconduct charges leading to a petition for a new trial and a pending hearing before Judge Shelburne Ferguson

The first traffic fatality of the year occurs in Highland Park as three year old Inez Jones, daughter of Mr and Mrs Rodney V Jones, is struck and killed near the Legion Recreation center. Washington report says Italy now holds 45 world aviation records, surpassing the United States at 42 and leaving France, Russia, Germany, and Britain behind. The U S had held top status but fell behind in 1924 and regained it two years later.
Off Cristobal in the Mosqu ito Gulf three U S destroyers searched for bodies of 14 believed dead after a Sikorsky amphibian of Pan American Grace Airways failed near Guayaquil Ecuador. Submarines S-43 and S-46 recovered wreckage and reported no signs of survivors as debris and life gear drifted 20 miles west of Cristobal where the plane had flown about 850 miles along the Pacific coast.
Fulton defeats G H Neeley in the statewide Democratic primary, winning 925 to 634 with Ward results split. In Gate City, Fulton leads West Ward 117 to 92 while Neeley wins East Ward 103 to 92. Fulton advocates school administration reforms giving taxpayers a voice. Neeley linked to a school pension plan.
Nashville Aug 4 The first mailing of state drivers licenses departs the capitol with 10 000 licenses sent to the central mailing office and 5 000 more to follow daily this week Director M M Yates said daily applications total about 6000 with 300000 on hand and 2500 returned for errors The 600 licenses are reserved for officials legislators and designated appointees Miss Gladys Duggin Willis of Nashville will receive the first license outside the reserved group noting it will be number 601
Goldsboro NC August 4 traffic passed over the Clinton Faison cotton road today. Formally opened yesterday in a program from Goldsboro to Faison and Clinton the 14 1/2 mile stretch will be watched by highway experts nationwide. If cotton is proved satisfactory for highways the cotton crop of the south may increase tremendously.
