Chicago marks a century since Fort Dearborn transformation into a city. James Thompson laid out the 1830 village with State Madison Desplaines and Kinzie streets as boundaries. Thompson, a teacher, militia captain and surveyor, helped plan the canal and city site with Illinois and Michigan Canal Commission. The town of Ottawa stood at the opposite end.
