Beef producers are optimistic about prices through 1965 but a Tennessee Extension economist says such optimism unlikely. Eugene Gambill notes a July 1 survey indicates feed supplies will rise in the second half, easing prices.
The weekly weather and crop bulletin for the week ended July 26 reports soil moisture mostly adequate but surface drying rapid. Rainfall fell in Upper East Tennessee, with excessive rainfall slowing snap bean picking on the Cumberland Plateau. Corn condition and tasseling progress, soybeans blooming, tobacco and pastures in good shape, with rain needed soon. Cattle on feed up 9 percent, July–September marketing plans up 6 percent, signaling a larger beef supply and potential price pressures. hog shortages may support beef, but overall feed costs remain firm as the new corn crop approaches.

Tennessee and U S wool production fell to about 213 million pounds in 1965, a four percent drop from 1964. The number of sheep shorn dropped to roughly 96 thousand, with an average fleece weight around 8.6 pounds and a total shorn weight of about 43 pounds per fleece. The nationwide trend mirrors a weaker year for wool output.

The 4-H Roundup begins today on the University of Tennessee campus with about 500 senior 4-H members and leaders expected. The theme is A Challenge to Grow and events run through Saturday including Demonstration Day, a university tour, a Carousel program, a hootenanny, a Smokies trip, special interest groups, and the State Council president election.
In Jonesboro a new trophy awaits contestants at the State 4H Tractor Operators Contest in Knoxville on Tuesday. Albert J. Swearingen, state H tractor project leader, announced a special handmade trophy for state winners in the 4H tractor project, with wands from previous winners. Donors are Sam and Dick Preston of Washington County, both former state champions. Swearingen noted 4H members strive to improve even after graduation. the trophy description will be released when the first award is given at the State 4H Roundup.
Ohio Cattlemen plan an eight day tour of East and Middle Tennessee August 4 to 13. UT Extension staff accompany the party to view feeder calf farms, Angus herds, and cattle operations. Stops include Sequatchie Valley, Falk Creek Falls State Park, Hermitage, Sam Paschal Walking Horse Ranch, and visits to counties such as Smith Wilson Hamblen and Cumberland. The itinerary includes a barbecue at Watauga Dam and fishing and fishing-related activities in Morristown and Grassy Cove.
Knoxville warns against discarding plastic household bleach bottles as sprays. Officials caution improper disposal may lead to leaks and chemical hazards while urging recycling and proper handling of containers.
