Forty nine boys from across the nation were judged after a grueling examination on ethics science and more. Huston, 16, earns a four year MIT chemical engineering course with expenses paid. Four other high scoring boys receive four year technical scholarships.
Graf Zeppelin makes good time across the Atlantic to America as Soviet officials in Moscow reveal three drastic conditions to resolve the Chinese Eastern railway dispute with China. The demands include freeing Soviet workers held in Manchuria, appointing both manager and assistant manager of the railroad, and an urgent conference to negotiate related questions.
In Norristown Pa a 23 year old, Farl Oberholtzer, waited at his girl's home for Edith Bosford and her friend William E. Ingram. Four shots killed Bosford and Ingram. Oberholtzer shot himself and was not expected to live. Bosford and Oberholtzer had dated three years. Ingram had dated Bosford since last week. A note in Oberholtzer’s pocket claimed heartbreak and a plan to take Bosford with him.
The Associated Press log records a Zeppelin journey over Europe with times and positions from Basel to Morocco. It notes passes over Basle Bel Fort Lyons Montelimart Nimes Barcelona Corunna and Casa Blanca, with sightings by ships and wireless stations near Gibraltar and the Mediterranean coast.
Lieut James H Doolittle of the army air corps receives the distinguished flying cross and oak leaf cluster from the War Department for a 1922 one stop flight from Pablo Beach Florida to San Diego California completed in 22 and a half hours. The oak leaf cluster honors a series of wing tests conducted by Doolittle.
Aboard the Graf Zeppelin the airliner sped west of Gibraltar at 7 30 am EST 600 miles beyond the strait heading toward the Azores. Weather over France and the Mediterranean slowed her but speed rose in the Atlantic as Dr Hugo Eckener pressed for a quick Lakehurst arrival within 80 to 85 hours.
John Fiurnette a 27 year old Elizabethton attorney accidentally wounded his 17 year old ward Virginia Amaral then killed himself after fetching a doctor Mrs Burnette his bride of three months said he was teaching her to load the pistol when it exploded Burnette walked onto the front porch and shot himself in the heart The coroner said Burnette died of a self inflicted wound and Amaral was reported in serious condition by Dr E T Pearson The body will be taken to Ridgley Tennessee for funeral services Burnette was University of Tennessee graduate and local lawyer based in Elizabethton.
Russell St. Clair Beitzel faced execution for the murder of Barbara Mauger, a 19 year old common law wife in Los Angeles. He smiled at witnesses, asked about practice drops, and received a blessing letter from his York Pa mother as guards prepared the 10 a.m. hanging amid strains of classical music.
