Sheriff John Howe said the FBI reported a man named John Lawes, suspected in the Church Hill bank robbery of July 1936, had been arrested in Gadsden Alabama and would be returned to Hairkins county. Lawes, a Johnson City native, denied knowledge of the robbery and would face identification by bank cashier W P Britton and other witnesses on arrival.

In Harlan Kentucky on July 3 Ward Ayers a 42 year old Insull coal miner was held without bail for grand jury action after waiving examination in the killing of his 14 year old bride Myrtle Jones Ayers. Ayers claims the shooting was accidental during a struggle for a gun. A coroner’s jury said the death came from a gun fired by someone else. Special officers Ler Freenor and Henry Metcalf led the investigation.
Washington July 4 John L Lewis aims to dominate the next president selection by building a political machine. He seeks Albany Chicago New York cities and nine states as core influence while planning to finance the Labor nonpartisan league and shift funding from miners and clothing workers to CLO. He envisions influence in eleven more states and seven others ahead of the 1940 campaign.
Textiles union TWOC accuses Borden Mills of Wagner Act violations including coercion intimidation and firing workers for union ties. Charges filed through A Peel Roanoke regional director. board action pending with possible election at the mill to determine TWOC recognition. Also note Gary Cooper home burglary case in Los Angeles with losses estimated above $25,000.
Washington July 31 administration forces pushed the revised wage and hour bill through the senate despite defections. A 48 to 36 vote defeated a motion to recommit to labor committee. The measure would set federal minimums and max hours for interstate industries and outlaw cross state child labor. The bill keeps house wage proposals of 70 cents and 35 hour week as a more drastic option. Debate featured multiple amendments and long roll calls, with the Wheeler Johnson child labor proposal adopted to curb interstate shipments of goods from states with stricter laws. By later action the senate moved to begin debate on the Wagner housing bill.
