Construction started today on concrete sidewalks for Holston street marking the city's May sidewalk program. Crews plan additional works on Charlemont and Wanda streets and completion of Dale street walks with materials already assembled.

Columbus Ohio April 26 one of the hottest fights in Ohio Republican ranks in years is expected to end tomorrow in the state wide primary Harding leading for preference and Chicago convention delegates Wood and his supporters contest delegates at large in most districts with key figures Willis Herrick Galvin Daugherty Turner Boyd pledged to the main tickets and Johnson Garfield as second choices in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Democratic Cox unopposed with some district delegate battles over wet and dry issue in Canton Sixteenth district.
Ex Sergeant Jack Smith recalls Red, a roguish soldier who swindled Confederate notes in France. He carried $30,000 in Confederate bills, swapped them for French currency, and parlayed the gains into a Paris spree before his death at the front.
At Joplin Missouri the state Democratic convention rejected United States Senator James A Reed as delegate to the national gathering and sent his name back to the Fifth district. The vote was 1070 to 490 with four not voting. The session featured intense wrangling over Reed and his opposition to the League of Nations. The convention endorsed anti Republican postwar policy and veteran benefits, praised farmers, welcomed women into the party, and set four women and four men as delegates-at-large with each holding half a vote. Presidential preference was not instructed.
Senator Underwood of Alabama was elected Democratic leader of the senate by unanimous vote of the minority. The five minute caucus produced no policy statement, with another caucus likely to set party plans.
Former Secretary McAdoo in a letter to the National Board of Farm Organizations argues for tax reform favoring earned over unearned income, opposes tax free bonds, supports broader farm policy publicity, farm tenancy reduction, and closer producer consumer ties while defending free speech and democratic rights.
In Indianapolis on April 26 a skeleton found in a private hospital attic was identified as Miss Carrie Selvage who disappeared March 11, 1900. Her brothers Edwin, William and Joseph Selvage recognized the blue dress and slippers. Coroner reports no violence. Miss Selvage, 43, was a former schoolteacher.

Kingsport ends a brief sugar shortage with about twenty barrels of syrupy sugar arriving. The new shipment will sell at 22 cents per pound, up from 20 cents. A merchant recalls a wholesaler trying 27 cents last week and notes the shipment was bought to set the price.
Washington April 26 representatives of large sugar refineries and Justice officials met to discuss the whole sugar situation but reached no action beyond talks. Tomorrow the conference will resume as reports persist of another sugar price rise. Refiners warned they cannot guarantee adequate supplies without further increases and noted intense competition with foreign buyers. Mr Figg urged a world supply survey and stock statements. refiners reportedly hold diminished or abnormal warehouse stocks.
Five ships carrying 500000 bags of Cuban raw sugar lie at New Orleans docks as unloading begins. The American Sugar Refining Company adds one cent to granulated sugar price, now 18.5 cents wholesale and 21.5 cents retail.
Francis Minor Moody of Chicago testified before the senate judiciary committee supporting a federal marriage and divorce law. He alleged more than half of U S divorces arise from trumped up charges linked to love for another, calling divorce a worse plague than the saloon and urging federal legislation.
Judge Smiths Auto Club formed by seven speed drivers in the business district near Kingsport Inn. Patrolman Leedy used a stopwatch to measure travel time and determine eligibility, with City Manager Kidd backing the method. Members paid an initiation fee of 8.50 dollars each and the roster includes Mustafa Babill Bill Turk Bruce Dunn A D Brockman I M Fuller M W Linnville N H Goodwin and F M Kelly. Officials warn drivers not to qualify, while noting the club may raise fees to deter membership.
A planned meeting at City Hall last Friday to launch an overall club failed due to poor attendance and the Kingsport band using the room. Dr. J Kesner attributed the cancellation to lack of interest and concluded the move may be revived or that wearing old clothes could yield similar price reductions.
London reports say a new Commons question pressed the foreign secretary to clarify policy on Jews in Palestine. Undersecretary Cecil Harmsworth affirmed that Britain's stance remains aligned with the 1917 Balfour Declaration supporting a Jewish national home in Palestine.
Kingsport launches a war on rats with a contest run by Dr. T. B. Yancey and funded by W. H. Harmon. Girls and boys can earn show tickets for every five tails, plus prizes including ten dollars, a Winchester rifle, and an air gun for top collectors. Ed Stuart already brought 51 tails. The contest runs until May 8.
El Paso reports a full division under Gen. Manuel Dieguez to attack Sonora and Sinaloa rebels before the rainy season. Navy support planned as eight bombing planes arrive at Guadalajara. Martial law declared at Pachuca and Hidalgo after rebel plot discovery.
Gen Alvarado said rebels captured two towns and two federal military trains. The Mexican embassy remained calm and officials believed Carranza still controls Mexican affairs despite the upheaval.
Harry Mallis, proprietor of the Kingsport Restaurant, will return to Europe for six months to visit his mother. He plans to take her to Athens and Palestine, tour relatives, and later visit the French battlefronts and England. The Mallis family left Constantinople twenty years ago and has suffered during the war, including the loss of relatives and their father.
