More Forests In Scott County Is REAP Goal

In Scott County, few eligible farmers have approved REAP forestry practices this year. ASC chair Charlie Stanley says the committee aims to boost woodland acres, citing growing wood product demand and environmental benefits. Forest Service seeks public help to catch fire setters

Cherokee National Forest chief urges citizens across East Tennessee Western North Carolina Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky to report anyone deliberately starting forest fires. Virus Yellow Dwarf Harms Tennessee Grain Crops

United Press International reports a virus disease called yellow dwarf affecting barley oats and wheat in Tennessee small grain operations. UT extension expert Charles Hadden notes yellowing on barley and wheat tips and reddening on oats, spread by aphids. disease does not persist in soil. The report also covers pasture fertilization demonstrations showing higher forage yields and profits, lice on cattle reducing gains and milk production, and a note on approaching fly season and need for control to protect dairy output.

Caged Tomatoes May Outproduce Vine Trellises Says Hok Instructor

BLACKSBURG, Va. Virginia Tech horticulture expert Charles O Gell says caged tomatoes can cut labor by about half versus trellis training. Cages reduce need for staking pruning and tying, with upright growth and shading that lowers sunscald and cracking. Trials show similar or higher yields in some cases, and drought tolerance may improve. Home gardeners increasingly adopt cages, with extension brochure 420 available for guidance.

Shivell Cow High Milk Yield Reported by Club

Kingsport owner PB J Shivell's Guernsey cow Karolyn Kate achieved T1000 pounds of milk and 539 pounds of butterfat in 305 days of twice daily milking. The record is verified by the American Guernsey Castle Club and supervised by the University of Tennessee.

Rutledge and Hamblen Lead In State Soil Judging

Four Tennessee teams won in the state soil judging contest held in Knoxville. Rutledge won the FFA division with Dresden second while Monroe County led the 4-H division and Hamblen County placed second. The state winners will compete in the International Soil Judging Contest in Oklahoma City in April 2029.

Farm Income Rises Slightly Costs Up In 1970

Knoxville Tennessee notes the University of Tennessee Center for Business and Economic Research reports modest 1970 gains in farm cash receipts, with livestock up 7.1 percent and crops down 7.4 percent, total just 1.5 percent above 1968. Costs are expected to rise sharply, especially for purchased feed, while cotton consumption declines.
