A guided wildflower walk will be held in the Holston Defense area on April 19. Participants meet at Civic Auditorium at 7:20 p.m. No children or cameras allowed. FRIDAY events include an April 20 lunch bake sale by Gate City Rebekah Lodge No 86 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lodge Hall. SATURDAY bake sales feature the Ladies Auxiliary West View Church in Kingport Mall and Freel's Drug Store area, plus Republican Women of Sullivan County in front of Miller's on Broad Street.
The Talent Beauty Pageant will be sponsored by Clinch Mountain Elks Lodge and Dunbar Temple on April 21 at 7 p.m. at the Elks Club on Lincoln Street. Allandale Mansion opens summer hours 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sundays. group tours available by calling 246-8613 or 246-2787. Fine Arts Center hosts Winslow Horner Illustrator exhibit through April 30 with Ann Staats weaving. hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
Terrace Cinderella Charlie and the Angel ends Thursday along with State Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean Martin Charlottes Web and Strand Zaat. The programs are rated G PG and feature a mix of family friendly fare ending this Thursday.
President Lon Nol announced on a national broadcast that his entire cabinet including Premier Hang Thun Hak resigned upon his suggestion after six months in office. A new cabinet with opposition members would be formed to broaden political support and solve Cambodia’s crisis amid ongoing Communist offensives and economic strain.
A House subcommittee approved a 150 million dollar add on to the 1973 supplemental appropriations bill to fund Vietnam era operations through June 30. The measure authorizes transferring 500 million from surplus accounts to cover war costs, amid opposition from Rep. Addabo who urged blocking funds for bombing campaigns in Laos and Cambodia. Simultaneous Communist assaults targeted Tran Khwai and Kep as U S B 52 raids continued.
A high-ranking diplomat notes cautious hope Lon Nol will gain broader cross party aid as Sirik Matak and In Tam resist joining without real powers. In Tam briefly accepted, then resigned as adviser on national reunification amid doubts over authority, following a visit by U S officials.
Labor Secretary Peter Brennan has five special guards protecting his office at a cost of 60 000 dollars a year. The guards are department employees added to regular GSA security, with Brennan saying the move aids veterans and minorities. Brennan has carried a gun on some occasions since becoming labor secretary.
Daniel Ellsberg testified he signed statements promising not to divulge classified government papers including the Pentagon Papers. He said he acted in good faith and violated Rand rules but contends that does not equate to breaking the law. He acknowledged removing documents without permission during his Rand Corp. work.
Hundreds of Filipinos in rural towns will be flogged with whips and thongs as penitentes carry crosses and wear black robes during Holy Week. A bearded former hoodlum is slated to be nailed to a cross north of Manila in a re-enactment. The ritual, condemned by church officials, continues as pilgrims walk toward Good Friday amid fasting and bloodletting beliefs.
Pennsylvania Welfare Secretary fired Polk State School superintendent Dr James McClelland after an unannounced visit found five by five wooden cages in a women’s day room and men’s pens on site. Cages described as indefensible and dehumanizing. McClelland claimed pens used since 1950s for separating disturbed patients under observation. Welfare will continue unannounced inspections across state facilities.
President Nixon led the applause as Frank Sinatra briefly returned from retirement to entertain at a White House dinner. Guests included Spiro Agnew Clare Boothe Luce and Henry Kissinger with Sinatra praised for capturing the room while Nixon stressed the welcome.
