William Arthur Johnson age 39 owner of Home Furniture Company at Five Points was killed when his car sideswiped a Fuller Manufacturing truck on the Johnson City Highway near Colonial Heights. The Cincinnati driver Wolfgang Heinpold 25 said Johnson’s car veered and struck the left side of the truck. Johnson, a Greene County native, had recently moved to Kingsport and lived at 1281 Catawba Street. Funeral services set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Zion Methodist Church Baileyton. Survivors include widow Clara Fern Kenny Johnson, son Janes Howard 12, parents Oscar Johnson Greeneville, four sisters and two brothers.

Senate and House panels weigh expansion of combat groups, hearings set on raising Air Force strength, and talks include a temporary draft while plans for universal military training are paused. Secretary Forrestal attended a committee session but did not advocate final action.

Windsor police reported that a group of more than 500 students and youths disrupted a Labor Progressive Party meeting at Petterson Collegiate. The storm damaged two barns housing horses with roofs torn off while horses remained unharmed. Injured workers include Tod Gravatte 21 and another man from Stekt Ot Burnstavtite who were hospitalized, Ralph Shaw treated and released, and an unidentified Black man also hurt. The tornado struck around 2 40 am bringing heavy rain and lightning and lasted over an hour.
