The event marks Norway’s worst wave disaster in memory.
Istanbul dispatch reports Samuel Insull faces extradition to the United States within a week on fraud charges after an appeal was blocked. The American Embassy will receive a presidential warrant allowing consul Berry to take custody and transport Insull to Chicago at government expense. President Roosevelt reportedly signed the warrant before a Florida fishing trip.
Mrs. Gilford Pinchot, wife of Pennsylvania's governor, challenged NRA head Hugh S. Johnson before the Senate labor committee. She accused Johnson of aiding Wall Street at workers’ expense and urged passage of the Wagner bill to strengthen the national labor board and prohibit company unions. She cited sweatshops returning under Blue Eagle branding and pressed for real NRA action.
Special to The Times reports Rhea Curtis died from a blow to the left head causing a blood clot in the brain. Doctors McConnell and Wallace announced after a post mortem at the McConnell Funeral Home near Kingsport where hundreds gathered outside. The report notes neck dislocation and a broken cheek bone in addition to the fatal blow.
April 7 reports say Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker with a possible lieutenant fled Texas authorities and moved toward Oklahoma after a kidnapping. Police broadcast sightings place them in a blue sedan near Guthrie, Stillwater, as federal and state officers tighten the manhunt in a sprawling pursuit across the region.
Washington April 7 AP Mysterious disbursement of labor union funds and a $7 500 intermediary payment in the Lindbergh kidnapping were outlined before the senate labor committee by Nathaniel Doragoff leading a New York local 306 delegation of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees. Doragoff said Sherman forced the intermediary Spitale a noted racketeer and cited $415 308 listed as rehabilitation expenses with little explanation. An attorney was paid $70,000 by Sherman though no litigation was handled for the local. He added a $25,000 Diamond Detective Agency payment remains unexplained. Doragoff accused labor leaders of blocking redress while questioning led to threats of jail. Sherman defended his expenditures as confidential.
A badly decomposed body found on Phipps Island at the Holston River’s forks is identified as Rhea Curtis, 27, missing from Gate City. The victim’s wife Grace Curtis identified him, with post mortem findings supporting foul play. Suspects Ervin Quillin and Verland McNutt remain held after a preliminary hearing, tied to Curtis’s death.
