Nashville April 6. The legislature, with 14 days left, weighs appropriations and revenue as debate over higher education funding and a possible extra session dominates. A revolt against recess failed. local bills pass Monday. A compromise sales tax bill is expected to shape the revenue outlook.
Rain and colder conditions expected across Tennessee Sunday with clouds Monday and possible rain in the east. Virginia sees rain Sunday and Monday with little temperature change. Kentucky also forecasts rain Sunday and Monday with east portions likely affected and minimal temperature variation.
Max Baer exits a New York restaurant after signing autographs. Owner Jack Dempsey asks for sixty cents for the visit. Baer jokes his fees and commissions, saying lawyers take 66 2 third percent, manager 33 1 fourth, and he has sold 40 percent of himself. The cashier records no sale.
Raymond Hamilton, last of the Clyde Barrow gang, returned to Huntsville Texas to face the electric chair after recapture in Fort Worth. He is held in a death cell with the heaviest guard for transfer from Dallas county jail. Authorities say he will die within 30 days. at least 40 persons may be indicted for conspiring to harbor him.
House leaders capitulated to demands for stern taxation in the war profiteering bill and opened the way for senate tax provisions. Chairman McSwain proposed a 100 percent excess profits tax, undermining the constitutional origin requirement and allowing the senate to set tax rates. Continued on page fourteen.
In Roanoke Virginia Senator L Dickinson of Iowa sharply urged that the New Deal recovery plans fail and that the brain trust bears responsibility. He warned the sky is growing darker under Democratic rule and the weather tomorrow is unknown as he linked Roosevelt to the party's leadership.
April 6 Washington reports a heated dispute over the social security bill as 17 Democrats push the measure as essential, while seven Republican critics call it unconstitutional and inadequate. intra party rifts widen with 103 Republicans unable to unify and 319 Democrats split on bringing the bill up next week under a gag rule.
In ash heaps near Dr. Harry E Zimmerly s rural Lancaster home bones were found as authorities investigate Mrs Gladys Lawson s disappearance. The doctor remains jailed on two unlawful operation charges amid questions about the patient s fate.
Congress endures a flood of bills as the relief measure worth 4.88 billion dollars clears final passage. President Roosevelt plans to sign the measure at the White House and issue orders to speed the program as administration officials anticipate swift action and funding for April.

Sheriff J C Keown sought assistance from North Georgia police to locate them as the girls prepared to ride home in the rain. They said they travelled as far as Nashville and Kentucky.

The Federal Trade Commission charged nearly the entire rubber manufacturing sector and two code boards with price fixing and conspiracy to restrain trade in violation of the act and their codes. Tennessee lifts the state ban on Sunday movies with a local option plan. Cities may legalize Sunday shows by council vote for charity or commercial use. Memphis moves quickly to pass an ordinance, while Chattanooga plans a submission with church-worship hours protected. Nashville and Knoxville show slower progress.
Four former convict camp officials face trial after authorities charged them with torturing prisoners in North Carolina. Henry C. Little R C Rape T M Gorson and J W Eady were arrested or sought on warrants for tying and chaining inmates to cell bars causing frostbite and infections leading to double amputations.
