Four former Brevard Banking Co officials must prison from two to five years and a fifth man faces a $5,000 fine for conspiracy to misapply county funds to aid an insolvent bank. J. S. Silversteen also fined $5,000. The North Carolina Supreme Court overturned lower court rulings and sustained circumstantial evidence of guilt in a three to two decision.
Connecticut Republicans select 19 delegates all unpledged but aligned with Hoover, the day’s sole formal nominating activities. In Wisconsin, primary returns count toward Hoover loyalists versus Lafollette progressives with conservative edge 16 to 11 as Roosevelt leads 25 of 26 Democratic votes. Georgia assigns its 28 votes to Roosevelt amid an independent pro Smith showing.

The Honolulu murder trial of Mrs. Granville Fortescu and three naval men over the Kahahawai lynching enters a fourth day with a cosmopolitan jury pool of seven races. Clarence Darrow, veteran defense attorney, voices astonishment at the rapid elimination of white veniremen and predicts at most three whites remain on the panel.
Governor Lawrence M. Judd protests Assistant Attorney General Richardson's plan to transfer appointment power for Hawaii's territorial attorney general and police chief to Washington. He warns of divided authority, loss of efficiency, and loss of self government, citing stark comparisons to imperial governance.
The House special economy committee sent a curt letter to President Hoover asking for specific recommendations to cut government spending. Chairman McDuffie of Alabama led two GOP dissenters as the panel sought bipartisan cooperation and invited Hoover to submit views or send a representative. The move follows a Senate panel's $12 million interior cut and signals further consolidation plans and service abolitions by week’s end.

Newfoundland capital St Johns was quiet under 850 special police as riots pressured Premier Sir Richard Squires. He returned to the Colonial building at night. 150 more officers stood by. Peter Cashin alleged falsification, and rumors of a national government led by F C Alderdice circulated but he denied knowledge. Riots included liquor-store raids.
On the Columbia University campus a one day student strike over the expulsion of Reed Harris ended with quiet restored. Dean Herbert E. Hawkes refused reinstatement and criticized a faculty petition asserting academic freedom was violated. Harris sympathizers planned a meeting to discuss next steps before Hawkes leaves for England.
The Navy League of the United States issued a sweeping denunciation of President Hoover's naval policy charging neglect of the navy and portraying armaments as a scapegoat for tax increases. It argues Hoover failed to replace aging vessels and cannot fund moderate fleet building despite global tensions. The attack follows prior clashes sparked by William Howard Gardiner's accusations of Hoover’s naval ignorance.
In Pittsburgh on April 7 two inmates, Martin Connelly twenty nine and Michael Ferraro twenty two of Allegheny county, were stabbed to death during an exercise period in the main street of the western penitentiary. James Gordon thirty three wielded the improvised knife. Warden Stanley P. Ashe said guards could not prevent the stabbing and the motive was not learned. Gordon previously escaped from the eastern penitentiary and was transferred in 1927.
Captain Frank M. Hawks renowned air speed king sustained serious injuries when his plane struck a stone wall at Worcester airport while attempting takeoff en route to Boston. He was hospitalized with jaw fractures and facial injuries but remained conscious, with no skull fracture reported.
More than 50 defendants facing murder and other charges from last May’s Evarts clash will be tried next month or a year after the shooting. Judge D C Jones schedules a special term April 18 to clear non labor cases and may order a second term for labor disputes in May. Warnings: Hightower and Jones of the Evarts United Mine Workers remain serving life for murder conspiracy.
Norfolk sources claim a link between Charles Lindbergh Jr and recent Norfolk activity. John H. Curtis said he met Lindbergh and relayed the baby was well. Police dismissed leads and noted no confirmed ransom plans or nursery activity.
Rear Admiral Burrage announced that Colonel Lindbergh has pressed to keep three Norfolk negotiators active to pursue recovering his kidnapped baby. Intermediaries are ready to depart at any time if needed, following John Curtis's report that the infant is safe and contact with the kidnapers has been made. Curtis, returning from a four day journey, said he had seen Lindbergh.
