SATURDAY Bake and Craft Sale Home Missions in Action of the Church of Christ in Christian Union will sponsor a bake and craft sale at the Kingsport Mall on a Saturday in April starting at Sam. The Neighborhood Service Center also sponsors a bake and craft sale on Saturday April 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 740 E Sevier Avenue. The Kappa Delta Alumni Association of Kingsport will sponsor a rummage sale April 7 at the old Hart Tile building.
The Welcome Wagon Club presents Kingsport's first gymnastics exhibition at Civic Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Barbara Heffner's Feminine Gymnastic Team performs to raise funds for equipment for city elementary and junior high special education classes. Tickets are available at the Auditorium or by calling 246-7603.
A damaged OCR list shows numerous speeding violations and forfeitures across multiple addresses in Church Hill and surrounding areas. Individuals include Wayne Dykes, Johaner Stianar, Ted Oliver, Mary Lemon, Swilliara Dean, Jack McCurry, Arnald L. Russell, Jeter, James E Tate, Stephen Garland, Claude Wright, Herbert Larkins, Shirley, William J. Flick, Rila Taylor, Virginia T. Woods, James Cainounn, Watana lean Warfa, Steve Te Carriger, and others, with varied fines from 1 to 959 dollars.
NASHVILLE UP I reports six of eleven escapees recaptured after a rope drop from a 60 foot prison tower. Still at large are Donald Hancock 26 Shelbyville serving 75 years for killing Lt Gibbs and Johnny Banter 27 Nashville serving 99 years for murder. Pioneer 1 races toward Jupiter crossing the moon orbit in hours for a 20 month, 620 million mile voyage. Pioneer 11 launches atop an Atlas Centaur rocket reaching 31,100 mph, despite a mispositioned nuclear generator on one end of a 10 foot boom. Both craft carry plaques and will study Jupiter’s atmosphere and radiation with 11 instruments, while considering distant Saturn exploration.
The airlift bringing over 280000 Cubans to the United States ends with the final two flights from Varadero. The program begun under Fidel Castro’s offer to let people leave ran since 1965, with occasional gaps, and transported about 3500 refugees monthly at its peak.
