Washington April 1 wage negotiations between railroad and union committees collapsed after railroad officials refused to continue talks on demands totaling about 1 billion dollars unless the public gains a voice in proceedings. The dispute moves to the railroad labor board created by the transportation act with three public, three employe, and three railroad members.
In Atlanta on April 1 the withdrawal of President Wilson from the Georgia presidential ballot reshapes the field to Pal mer Watson and Hoke Smith after signers reduced the petition to below the required 100. Other withdrawals followed while Hoover’s name was dropped for being non Democratic. Heavy rains caused two landslides on the Co C and O railroad near Soldier and Waycross disrupting trains No 2, No 3 and No 8, with widespread flood damage reported around Kingsport and Reedy Creek.

Rev Walter S Hendricks announces the Rev S B Ogle of First Baptist will preach The Origin of the Church.

Kidd, Kingsport’s new city manager, announced paving Sullivan street and Sullivan boulevard, sidewalk work on Broad Charlemont Boone Wanda and Dale streets, and plans for three new grammar schools. Bids for school construction and bond election details will follow. Speed ordinance enforcement will be strictly observed with public cooperation urged.
Five Socialist members Louis Waldman August Claessens Samuel A DeWitt Samuel Orr and Charles Solomon were expelled from the New York State Assembly. The judiciary committee labeled the Socialist party traitorous and sought bills to bar parties with alien members from the official ballot. Speakers condemned the move as workers’ rights at stake as ousted members vow the people must be heard.
London April 2 United Press reports Sir Hamargreen Wood appointed chief secretary for Ireland in Lloyd George's cabinet to succeed Ian Hay MacPherson. The government announced the appointment today.
A bill creating a bureau of war benefits within the interior department to handle all affairs of service men was prepared for introduction in the House by Representative Ireland of Illinois, at Washington on April 2.
Secretary Daniels testified before the senate naval affairs committee that he did not urge fear of Japan. He said he advocated a large naval base funding at San Francisco and noted the discussion touched on Japan in general.
The fourth in a series of community meetings in Sullivan county on state expansion in agriculture and home economics was held at Fordtown with County Agents H. M. Cox and Miss Carrie Lovette. Stereopticon lectures covered pure bred stock silos land liming and rural home practices. A large audience attended and the talks were well received. The final meeting of the week will be in Pactolus tonight.
