Thousands of Spaniards flee mountains to refuge in France as civil war rages. Government militiamen retreat from Pyrenees positions near Lerida while civilians suffer frost and exhaustion. Frontier guards and mass exits mark a day of dire hardship amid broader European wartime tensions.
Tennessee sees mostly cloudy skies with possible rain in extreme east tonight and in southwest Saturday, with slightly colder temperatures and light frost tonight. Kentucky experiences mostly cloudy night and Saturday with a bit more cold. Virginia remains cloudy and colder with southeast showers tonight, then partly cloudy Saturday with cooler conditions in the east and central areas.
Philadelphia April 1 a Philadelphia physician told a post graduate institute that unemployment keeps thousands of men from marrying. Dr Russell L Boles of Philadelphia General Hospital blamed a generation of nervous women striving to compete with younger sisters. He cited 10 000 000 unemployed men as denying marriage and children.
April 1 telegraph workers processed thousands of messages as the government reorganization bill neared a final vote. The heated house debate featured protests led by Rev. Charles E. Coughlin and claims of a coordinated propaganda drive. Leaders predicted passage, while opponents warned of ongoing lobbying and patronage. Continued on page four.
In Orlando Florida two patients died within hours of each other as nine people have now died after receiving a cancer treatment serum. Dr T A Neal said all patients had the serum from one bottle at his clinic and tetanus treatments failed to help. An inquest was paused as authorities investigate with the FDA and county medical association.
WARM SPRINGS Ga April 1 President Roosevelt neared the end of his southern vacation as observers wondered if he encouraged Gov B D Rivers to oppose Senator Walter F George in the September primary. Rivers 42 year old former lawyer from south Georgia, says he is 100 percent for the President and his program. He rode with the President on several occasions and said he is not a candidate for any office at this time.
Nashville April 1 Deputy Warden C Woods said a man held in Paris city jail as a suspicious character was Lonnie Taylor of Knoxville. Taylors prior crimes include four robbery counts and a 99 year murder sentence after a Brushy Mountain prison escape and subsequent recapture.
A four day search for 14 year old A J McHenry shifted to Norris Lake as authorities fear he may have drowned after leaving home with a bird dog. About 30 CCC camp members and 15 neighbors joined the hunt. a boat found on the lake was water filled.
In Oakland California a $7,500 auto accident case against Robert G. Meyer ended with an agreed out-of-court settlement of $1,600, reached by opposing counsel and the jury after the jury had been discharged. Meyer believed the jurors had decided against him.
The petition from a laymen’s committee for preserving the Southern Methodist Church argues against unification with the northern Methodist Protestant Church. Presented to the college of bishops in Memphis, it cites five reasons including ignorance of the plan, general terms, loss of autonomy, and minority voice concerns.
Washington reports Congress heard Bell Telephone could cut rates by 25 percent by removing costly policies. FCC Commissioner Paul A. Walker said the savings derive from halting remanufacturing, engineering, depreciation, bookkeeping and other practices led by AT&T. AT&T President Walter Gifford disputed the report, calling its claims unfair and noting Bell System earnings are not excessive.
Tennessee state board clears Davidson County election commissioners George Phillips and James Ogilvie after a five hour hearing. The panel finds no basis to claims of bias against Thomas L. Cummings in the February 3 mayoral race that pitted him against Jack Keefe. Campaign manager W H Steger testified that only one of 32 officers favored Cummings, while other witnesses noted Keefe strength.
Conservatore Romano reports the Austrian bishops declaration supporting Nazism was made without Vatican consultation. The Vienna archbishop and five prelates signed, saying they acted from conviction and would pledge allegiance on April 10, amid Austro German unification expectations.
N AS EVILLE April 1 AP Tennessee public utilities commission opened an electric rate reduction case against Kingsport Utilities Inc The panel set April 26 to show cause why rates should not drop and noted no specific reduction was proposed Commissioners comments suggest lowering rates as much as possible The company has begun property appraisals and studies to justify a rate cut, while denying prior promises to reduce rates last autumn.
General Electric announced graduated pay reductions effective April 1 for all full time salaried employees earning more than 2000 a year. The first 2000 remains untaxed, per President Gerard Swope. Other items note Senate finance bill progress and Mexico oil property discussions with President Roosevelt. A farm home fire in Smithfield results in two deaths.
Senator Norris expects the congressional committee to require double its 50,000 dollar appropriation to investigate the Tennessee Valley Authority. After Roosevelt signs the investigation resolution, five members from each house will be appointed to the panel. Norris warned the inquiry could need 350,000 dollars and a large staff of investigators, engineers, accountants, and experts to cover all market aspects.
U S Navy bans night flight around the Hawaiian Islands after two fatal crashes during war games claim 11 lives and rough losses of three planes. Rescue efforts for six missing men collapse as admiral Bloch laments no survivors or plan to find them.
Twenty candidates seeking nomination to eight county offices bucked a tight race in a Democratic primary. About 5 000 to 5 500 residents of Kingsport Bristol and Sullivan County prepare to vote tomorrow. The campaigns avoided mudslinging yet promise a bitterly fought election.
The Kingsport Times will display primary election results tomorrow in front of its Market Street office starting at 4:66 p.m. A loudspeaker system will relay county results from all 22 districts as they arrive. Market Street will be blocked at Cherokee and Commerce to ensure clear access for spectators once the clock reaches the designated hour. No motor traffic will be allowed in the Clock district after 4 p.m.
