John L Pennington Dakota Governor 1874 1878 Biography

John L Pennington served as fifth territorial governor of Dakota from 1874 to 1878 succeeding Burbank. An Indiana native noted for blunt integrity he oversaw the opening of the Black Hills to settlement drawing thousands of gold seekers. He later lived in Yankton and died in 1900 at seventy.
