Lawrence and the women extinguished the flames before damage but the fire alarm sounded. The fire company arrived promptly and, due to a passing miscommunication, briefly stretched hoses to the Congregational parsonage before switching to the church. The flames were already out when water continued.

He notes Elk Creek offers timber and possible crops with a saw mill nearby now and moving closer in winter.
