Washington talks report a compromise ending a walkout by union workers at thirteen capi tal hotels. Agreement gives preference to union members in filling vacancies while preserving hotel management's staffing rights. The settlement was announced by John R. Steeman, conciliation chief of the Labor Department.
The West Tennessee church at Forked Deer River raised funds for an Up-to-date heating plant to replace wood stoves. The furnace was installed in the cellar and vented through floor gratings. An elderly congregant in evening services witnessed the change as warmth returned.
In Shelby Monday the Mountain Baptist association elected Rev. J. W. Costner of Lawndale as clerk to finish the late Rev. J. W. DeVenny’s term. Costner heads the Sunday school work and pastors Pisgah Baptist near Casa. The meeting included a joint session with the Women’s Missionary Union and a lunch hosted by WMA. Mrs. John Wacaster and Mrs. Wade D Bostick led planning for the event. Rev. A. G Sargeant reported continued April class enrollments. Wyan Washburn was endorsed to head Baptist Training Union work. Moderator J. W. Suttle will name his successor.
Raleigh March 21 The house approved a job resolution to bar new bills after March 7 and push sine die adjournment on April 1. Rep Bryant proposed noon adjournment. amendment rejected. Caffey Fenner Hatchee Wake pressed the measure as the biennial school and tax machinery acts, key for 100 counties, remained unbrought to the floor.
The Band Parents Association will hold an important meeting Monday at 7:30 in the Central Shop Auditorium to plan the Greensboro trip for the local band. All interested residents are invited to attend whether they have children in the band or not. The association has supported the band’s success through fundraising and advertising. Nearby coverage notes the state and Raleigh context of legislative actions.
Miss Jean Ware a stipative model of Mr and Mrs Maret has posed for the famous illustrator Joe Little. Ware, now in New York, acts as a commercial model for leading advertising agencies in America. Her work appears in the weekly American Weeks.
Vincent Cots and A. Weaver, both residents with links to Kings Mountain, were condemned by a Connecticut Superior Court for the killing of storekeeper Joseph G. Cripps during a January 2 hold-up. Weaver alleged Cote acted as the killer while he waited outside. Cote confessed being present but claimed he did not witness murder. Weaver had left Kings Mountain years earlier for Middletown, Connecticut.
The State Magazine in Raleigh North Carolina published a band picture submitted by Cari Geereh. Haywood Lynch sent Geereh the photo at the request of band booster Thomann. The widely circulated weekly focuses on state news and has carried the band image in its issue.
Investigation into theft of dynamite from the Campbell Limestone Co powder house Friday night. Eight sticks stolen, eight recovered near a quarry about a mile away. No caps or fuses taken. one sack broken into with several sticks missing. Sheriff Brown and Constable Clary reported the sack was found in a field near the college.

Edenton reports a second stone connected to Sir Walter Raleigh's Lost Colony discovery. The roughly 60 pound quartz-toned stone, three times larger than the first, was found near Center Hill by H. T. Chappell, five miles from the Chowan River in Perquimans County. Earlier stone from Sept 1937 yielded Elizabethan lines but no colony clarity.
Wablington March 21 The house military committee urged authorization for the government to acquire 10 million dollars worth of war materials by direct purchase or exchange for surplus agricultural commodities or no payment on war debts. Roosevelt’s likely stance limits yearly allocations, so the program would span four years with annual distribution to the war department. The plan aims to stock manganese, tin, chrome, mercury, and other critical materials for U S shortages.
The Business Men's Club convenes this evening at seven at the Woman's Club building. Members are asked to note the time change from six thirty to seven. Messrs C G White Gilbert Hord and P M Nessler comprise the entertainment program committee.
Firefighters were called Monday night at 9 30 to extinguish a small blaze at a mall. The incident caused minor damage to a small portion of the building and no injuries were reported.
Attendance at Kings Mountain Central School dipped as the measles outbreak neared its peak with 49 pupils absent from an enrollment of about 850. Most absences were in lower grades, and about one hundred pupils had not yet contracted the illness. The epidemic had recently begun at West School, where five students were sick, and spread into surrounding grades.
Officials in Kings Mountain county report a spreading illness affecting children. Marnes notes a long week of preparations and cooperation with health authorities. Quarantine measures will be in place for fourteen days after exposure. Multiple families report several young cases with many children ill and kept at home.
Kings Mountain high stepping band to be feted Friday at 7 20 PM in the Wo Club Building by members of the Olle D Green Post of the American Legion. The event honors the band for winning at the Shelby State Officers meeting and features a cup presentation. Wives of Legionnaires attend, post members bring 199 membership cards, and toastmaster I B Keeter leads the program with committee members Paul Mauney Frank Glass Jee Hridges W W Souther and Charles Thomasson assisting.
The Little Theatre Group will meet at the Club House tonight at 7:30. Members are urged to be present. A singing convention at Bethlehem begins Sunday at 2:00 PM. The Rangers of Charlotte will attend. The public is invited.
