Rev. F Ray Riddle Jr native of Columbia South Carolina and pastor of Lake View Presbyterian Church New Orleans will be guest minister at the Presbyterian church Sunday morning. The host pastor Rev P D Patrick calls him outstanding and says the visit is opportune ahead of the Youth Caravan event.
Two permits were issued last week at City Hall. Home Building and Loan received a permit on Wednesday for remodel work at a business building on Stoun Street. Warren Esse obtained a permit on Tuesday for construction of a new four room dwelling off York Road at a cost of 2200 dollars.
Billy Gene Amos, among six Kings Mountain youths at Boys State sponsored by the American Legion at Chapel Hill, was elected commissioner of agriculture in elections held with the convention.
James Eiwand, recent UNC graduate, accepted a position with National Cash Register and left for Raleigh last Saturday. The move marks the start of his professional career with the company, highlighting the university’s role in preparing graduates for industry.
Billie Gene Amos represents Kings Mountain High School in Washington D C this week at the National Honor Society convention.
ARP church hosts union service this week with Rev. W H Stender delivering a message. The service starts at 8 00 p m and the public is invited. The choir will offer special music.
Last rites for Mrs. Alice Owens, 51, of Clinton, North Carolina, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday from Grace Methodist church. Interment followed at Mountain Rest cemetery. Mrs. Owens lived in Kings Mountain 14 years before moving to Clinton four years ago and was a member of Grace church. She died at her Clinton home Thursday night. Surviving are four sons Russell Gastonia Elmer Charlotte Oscar Miami Fla and Charles Manie of Ring? Monktais. one brother HN. Metmann Colmer Cal. two sisters Mrs. W. J. Nodin Clinton and Mrs. G. D. Small Gastonia. six grandchildren.
Announcement from B. Brackett of Bessemer City urges all relatives and friends to attend the Brackett reunion at Uncle Ben Brackett’s old home place near Brick Creek on July Fourth with well filled baskets of food.
The city board in special session set August 2 for the Jelty charter election and took several actions. It tabled action on a new EA Harel, named L. A. Hoke to a three year term on the planning board, postponed bids on street paying work to June 29, and considered a resignation letter from City Attorney Harrill. The board unanimously voted to rescind a school aid appropriation after the attorney general’s opinion. Cont'd on page eight.
Grace Church last week paid off all indebtedness on the new fifty thousand dollar church building. Construction of the edifice, which replaced the old church destroyed by fire two years ago, was completed last June. Services are being scheduled soon. A contribution of fifteen hundred dollars was received from Behe and other denominations. The Board of Extension noted the support, with Pastor Rev. G. W. Fink named.
Everett L. Carlton, 27, a World War II veteran and multi-sport athlete, will become the new high school football head coach in Kings Mountain this September. A Duke graduate and Lenoir-Rhyne alumnus, he has drawn strong recommendations from Duke, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Lexington authorities, with a record of winning teams across his athletic career. City tax payers may receive a 2 percent discount if 1948 city taxes are paid by next Wednesday, with additional deadline details noted by City Clerk Crouse.
Capt. Houston announced that the Kings Mountain National Guard company has about 80 vacancies. Veterans with less than 12 months active service aged 19 to 25 will not be drafted if they are National Guard members. Men 17 and 18 may enlist but must register for the draft on their 19th birthday. A final copy of the selective service bill had not arrived in Raleigh, but draft registration rules apply to Guardsmen discharged before age 26. Local men expect to join and train at home. interested individuals should contact the interviewing officer promptly.
Slim Wray was freed on an armed robbery charge after the case was dismissed and he was fined costs on a forceable trespass charge in Cleveland Recorders Court last Friday. Four others were fined $5 and costs on gambling, including Bright Blackwell who signed the robbery warrant. others were Benny Brackett, Roy Phillips, and Paul Hord. Wray allegedly used a pistol during the alleged recovery of $150 in a disputed game. Meter receipts for the week ending Wednesday noon totaled $165.17 per city clerk 8. A. Crouse.
Kings Mountain business firms plan observance of Monday July 5 as July 4th falls on Sunday. Merchants Association secretary announces closures. Ware & Sons will shut July 5. city offices slowed.
The state highway department reopened the inspection lane last weekend but only a trickle of autos passed seeking the blue pass sticker. Attendants expected total inspections by Wednesday and noted NC law requires testing before January 1, 1949. The lane will run through June 30, with many vehicles yet to be tested.
A large crowd gathered at City Stadium last Friday night to see a donkey racing event. The arrival was delayed by a mountain road accident in Ohio that killed several people, delaying traffic for hours. Refunds were issued for latecomers, and Miss Lotese Bogard of Shreveport directed the event.
Kings Mountain prepares for the Miss Kings Mountain 1948 pageant and Miss Kings Mountain Junior, part of the annual Junior Chamber of Commerce event with Miss America ties. An unscheduled dump Tuesday afternoon caused a garbage truck to ignite. As the truck burned the waste was dumped on the highway near Joe Neisler’s York road residence, briefly blocking traffic until city fire chief Grady King and officers extinguished the blaze.
John Moss of the Western district announced that six teams will start in the Lions tournament to be held at the country club next Friday. He expects at least six more entries before the deadline. The drawing of pairings will generate interest as team managers prepare for the event with entertainment chaired by Hilton Ruth. The tournament will be broadcast over WGNC radio.
