Bond Votes Loom in North Carolina Statewide Referenda
Citizens prepare to vote on two bond questions to fund school construction across 100 counties and a $200 million rural road program. A one cent per gallon gas tax would accompany the road bond, with factions led by Gov Kerr Scott and petroleum interests advancing opposing views amid political maneuvering and questions of state debt. Community events highlight highway leadership and local figures, including Joseph Graham at Bethware, while editorial notes hint that Scott forces may prevail in this preliminary political clash before 1952 elections.

North Carolina cotton growers may obtain Smith Doxey classing on their 1949 crop once ginners qualify to sample. County agents prepare applications due in Raleigh by July 15. Bonded ginners can offer the service to members of cotton improvement associations, aiding growers to learn official grade and staple and the price per pound guaranteed under the cotton subsidy program.
