P D Herndon among about 300 federation members at a Tuesday hearing before the General Assembly to divorce the division of optimism that the federation bill would be acted on despite opposition from a group.
The Kings Mountain Kiwanis Club plans a Thursday night program about boys and girls work. The speaker's name was not announced, with Harold Hunnicutt in charge of arrangements. The venue is Shelby City Mall, though the exact room was not specified.
Kiwanis club heard F J Summers of First National Bank and Paul Mauney outline a 500 to 600 retreat freezer locker plant to serve Kings Mountain and surrounding area. They discussed financing options including private ownership or a stockholders setup and potential benefits for the community.
Bright colored signs reading Thirty Minute Parking prompted enforcement in the business district. Many motorists received warnings or tickets as red marks appeared on tires and parking rockets under windshields. City Hall advised tickets would be warnings on first offenses.
In Charlotte last Thursday night a gathering of sportsmen urged action after a divisive period. E. Voss of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation called for collaboration with farmers to restore gates and support conservation. The Kings Mountain event, backed by local sportsmen and conservation groups, emphasized practical work and joint effort to protect wildlife resources.
John W. Gardner, Shelby route three negro, asked for jury trial on charges of driving drunk and without a license after an accident around midnight Sunday. He allegedly knocked a fire hydrant off the water main in the 300 block on East King Street, causing $200 in city water system damage and cutting water to nearby homes for about 11 hours, leaving families without heat or water. Chief N. M. Farr, police chief, said Gardner was driving west toward the railroad when he struck the hydrant on the south side of King Street.
Funeral services are planned for James Wesley Walker four who died at his home. The burial will be at the local cemetery with church rites. A memorial is requested to honor the child’s short life.
E A Harrill told the Herald the petition seeking charter changes is advancing well and aims to finish by early next week. Last week 1 093 signatures were reported though unaudited. the signers may indicate support or opposition on the petition.
City board of aldermen held a regular monthly meeting Tuesday night focusing on routine reports and business. The session included a delegation led by Arthur Biltcliffe Grier Sipes and W L Waterson requesting sewer extension on Goforth Street, with others on the waiting list. the board authorized $225 payment to B D Ratterrée for his work.
A local record shows a case halted in Recorder's Court here. Judge J Bell received a filed document and court action related to a matter labeled stitt 90.
A capacity crowd of about 200 Cubs Scouts and Scouters attended the Kings Mountain Boy Scout district annual banquet at the Woman's Club. Rev J Lewis Thornburg spoke on Scouting's broad aspects. Deed presented for Carl Davidson Memorial Camp property. Donors named. Ceremony honored 20 years of Thornburg's service and Silver Beaver recipient. Officers and plans announced for the coming year.
The North Carolina Symphony will present its 1947 Kings Mountain concerts on March 31 instead of March 5. Mrs. Aubrey Mauney said memberships will stay open until about March 8 and that roughly $100 is needed to reach the quota. The group, previously here last year, will perform a school matinee and a full-dress evening concert.
Miles Mauney reports the Oberlin Conservator Symphony will perform Herbert Elwell’s Lincoln Requiem in a worldwide NBC broadcast Saturday afternoon. The program runs 2:00 to 2:30 p m coast to coast. Elwell is a noted composer and Conservatory staff member. Kings Mountain men are Ohio.
The Rev Vaassie Jones of Elsenboro and the Rev Paul Bright of Forest City conducted the rites. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Mrs Hutchins, ill for more than a year, had lived in Kings Mountain for four years. She is survived by her husband Isaac Hutchins, four daughters and five sons.
Proposed act authorizes commissioners to levy a tax rate exceeding eight cents per hundred dollars for a special purpose. Funds would pay salaries of personnel tied to the Home, outlining duties and fiscal allowances under the fee system.
