Regular Boy Scout Court of Honor for Piedmont district set for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall courtroom with a scouter round table during the meeting announced from Piedmont council headquarters. Town notes also report meter receipts and local civic activities including Kiwanis and church events.
The city board of commissioners last Thursday night raised the monthly rental to $4, payable semi annually in advance. The central fee has been cited as part of the new policy, with details to follow.
Kings Mountain residents are urged to donate blood to the Red Cross area bank when the Bloodmobile returns for a one day visit. It will be at the Woman's Club from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local officials say the town has supplied less blood than used, with $3 pints needed in three months and a 130 pint deficit. Dr. P. G. Padgett notes the program relies on community support to meet local hospital needs and regional distribution.
Porter, father of John Porter, died at 7:30 a.m. of a heart attack at his home in Durham. Services were held Wednesday afternoon.
Earl Bumgardner, longtime Neisler Mills employee and active St Matthew Lutheran Church member, died suddenly of a heart attack at 3 pm in Kings Mountain. Survived by wife Carrie Fails Bumgardner, a son, ten brothers, a sister, and other relatives. Funeral services were at St Matthew's with burial following. body lay in state from 2:30. Pallbearers named Ray Cline Dan Finger among others.
Boy Scouts will officially take over the city Saturday with Scout officials serving as mayor city clerk treasurer and department heads. Little Theatre Kings Mountain presents the three act mystery Ost Train at Central auditorium Saturday night at 8. The plot centers on a Maine railroad station near the Canadian border with a phantom death dealing locomotive and rum runners. A detective’s silly actions add humor as the case is solved. Admission is 25 and 60 cents.
Franklin Ware, manager, says the Kings Mountain office received 440 total compensation claims last week. The Kings Mountain area labor force is about 5,000, and Ware calls the report “not so bad” though worse than the recent low.
City records show about 300 vehicle owners have not bought stickers despite a February 1 deadline. Police Chief HA Logan Jr. said around 200 payments had been received with 1,115 sales listed in 1953 data while work to collect remaining fees continues.
The city board of commissioners approved a plumbing code and will charge a 35 dollar sewer tap fee after February 15. The fee will be paid by the plumbing contractor and included in estimates, with the city piping to the property line. The Army notified Mrs. Emmie Owens Benfield that her son, Cpl. Billy Andrew Owens, listed missing in Korea, has been recovered and identified. He was killed in action July 17, 1950, in Kyedong, Korea, and his body will be shipped to Kings Mountain for burial. Owens, 19, previously served on Okinawa before heading to Korea with Headquarters Co., 3rd Battalion, 29th Infantry Division. He is survived by his mother, stepfather Horace Benfield, and brother Charles H. Owens. He attended Kings Mountain High School and was a member of Tem. I 5.
Mayor Bridges says land may be needed for rebuilding and expansion of the McGill septic tank. Engineer Dickson noted current tract insufficient for the treatment plant and relocation. Adjoining property owner Paul Mauney is involved. City Attorney Davis reports deed records show ownership and possible condemnation to obtain adjoining land for expansion.
The city installed a new traffic regulator this week to eliminate peak hour congestion on Gold street by easing eastbound vehicles into Battleground. The signal aims to coordinate flow and reduce long backups during busy periods.
G C Kelly will head the Kings Mountain Boy Scout district annual fund drive with a kickoff dinner at the Masonic dining hall Friday at 6 45 p.m. The quota is 1700 with guests including Mr Schiele executive of the Piedmont Council and committee members Paul Neisler Sr W K Mauhey Jr Tolly Shuford John Lathem George Hinney Arnold Kiser and J C McKinney.
A ground breaking service for the Faith Baptist church on Bennett street is set for Sunday at 3 p m. The church, the newest in the Kings Mountain Baptist association, organized November 15 1953 with 34 charter members now has 56. Bur ington Mills Inc Phenix plant donated the lot. The movement began as a mission sponsored by the Second Baptist church of Kings Mountain about five years ago. Participants include Rev Gordon Weekley Rev Lawrence Roberts Rev T W Bray Rev Flay Payne church deacons and members. The Junior Chamber of Commerce meets Tuesday at 7 p m at the Masonic dining hall.
Kings Mountain surpassed its 1954 March of Dimes quota with totals above 5200, aided by Co-Chairman George Thomasson and many volunteers. A charity dance on January 30 netted 131.20, about 200 attendees won a floor prize, and 42 test tube races plus a ten dollar bill among the winnings added 163.46 to the fund. Charles Nessler cochaired, and organizers urge completion of the drives.
Kings Mountain sees unemployment drop as textile firms boost operations. Consolidated Textiles Inc plans full time three shift five day weeks, after operating on alternate weeks this year. About 285 Consolidated workers back at work as other plants like Slater Manufacturing resume partial capacity and Kings Mountain Manufacturing may reopen next week. Bonny Mill restarted February 1, unemployment claims for the week ending February 9 total 136, with 370 initial claims.
City board received a petition from 14 taxpayers opposing using the Burlington Mills tract off Cleveland Avenue for a city recreation center. BurMil may sell the site for development as a recreation center, with officials noting discussions and a potential offer. Petition signers urge locating a more suitable site nearby.
City utilities department will draft bank payments from water and power accounts at customer option. City Clerk Joe Hendrick said many customers favored the plan amid late or curt payments while noting a similar state policy existed once but was discontinued.
