Woman's Club to Host Sunday Turkey and Ham Dinner
The International Relations Department of the Woman's Club will serve dinner Sunday after noon at the club. Mrs. J. K. Willis says turkey and ham dinners cost 1.25 for adults and 75 cents for children with advance reservations. Ice cream, homemade cakes and pies will be sold for extra. City Purchasing Galion Machine for City Streets
At a special meeting the city board of commissioners voted to buy a Galion motor grader from North Carolina Equipment Company of Charlotte for 10 dollars. Bids were received eight days earlier after deferral to study a used machine in Salisbury. The board approved paving projects on Morels Street, Gaston Street, Goforth Street, Gold Street, Landing Street and extensions, plus seal coating on City Street, South Railroad Avenue extension, and Church Street. All members were present and decisions were unanimous.

Twenty one area Republicans met at the Morrison Building to organize a forward drive for the Republican faith in Number 4 township and surrounding areas. They elected W. T. Weir as chairman and Grady Howard Charles Alexander and W. A. Williams as precinct leaders while planning to scout and select a new county Republican chairman to depose J. Worth Silver of Shelby. Prison Camp Trusty Senator Geddie Escapes Near Kings Mountain
A Negro prisoner named Senator Geddie, a trusty at a prison camp, escaped from a county work crew near Kings Mountain, yesterday morning around 9. Bloodhounds reached the scene, but no trace of Geddie was found. Poston, superintendent of the camp at Shetty, reported the escape and noted confusion over the prisoner’s crime and sentence.

Kings Mountain high school will offer three additional elective courses this year announced by Principal Rowell Lane. A new guidance course for ninth graders, a general business and business English course for tenth and eleventh grades, and a solid geometry course for seniors. Power Blackouts Set For Sunday
All city electrical power will be cut off weather permitting Sunday from 1 to 7 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. to allow the new line from the sub-station to the city system by Bryant Electric & Repair Company of Gastonia to be connected. The blackout aims to divide the city’s power load.

Rites Held for Otis B. Smith Lightning Victim
Otis B. Smith 28 died instantly when struck by lightning Sunday near the Bullock home as he held the three year old son of Lester Bullock. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Patterson Springs Baptist church with interment in the church cemetery. A Purple Heart WW II veteran born in 1935 in South Carolina he served in Italy in World War I as a private in the 551st Infantry and was severely wounded. Surviving are his sister Mrs zle Roberts and brothers Glenn W. Smith John Sidney Smith both of Kings Mountain Benny L. Smith of Akron Ohio. Pallbearers were Otis D Green Post 155 American Legion members.

Joy Theatre plans to install Cinemascope the new motion picture projection by 20th Century Fox. Manager E Tutor says wide screen on order with delivery promised by October 1. Department Head Accepting Post With Cherryville
Henry the city's superintendent of public works has resigned effective September 14 1953 to take a similar post in Cherryville at a salary of 5200. The Kings Mountain board unanimously accepted the resignation and asked him to remain as long as possible. Henry joined two years ago and rose from mechanic to assistant superintendent before becoming head of public works. He thanked the board employees and citizens for their cooperation.

City Fathers Meet Thursday
The city board of commissioners will hold a special meeting Thursday night at 8 o clock. Mayor Glee A Bridges said discussion will focus on naming a successor to Tom Henry as superintendent of public works with several applications already on hand and interviews planned. The board will also receive bids for painting the inside of the city water tank and bids for a used police department motorcycle the city previously rejected at 400 dollars.

Curtain Falls On Kings Mountain Drama Ends Run
The 1953 Kings Mountain commemorative drama The Sword of Gideon closed after a four weekend, eleven performance run beginning July 23 with 4023 attendees. One performance was rain cancelled. Sam Stallings noted the cast and crew held an informal party at Kings Mountain Country Club. The show drew praise from reviewers and visitors from distant cities and states. Plans hinted at another amphitheatre production in 1954 at Kings Mountain National Military Park.

May Open In Two Weeks 74 Highway Set To Open
Highway 74 between Kings Mountain and Gastonia is expected to open to traffic around September 1 barring weather or unforeseen difficulties. District Engineer L B Peck said two lanes should be ready while four lane boulevard construction continues. The route is now detoured via Bessemer City as work focuses on King Mountain and Gastonia ends.
