Rev Edgar Cooper a Kings Mountain native will deliver the sermon at Boyce Memorial ARP Church Sunday at 11:00 in morning services The pastor is on vacation and Cooper fills the pulpit for the regular service.
Kings Mountain Kiwanis members were set to hear City Engineer E. C. Brandon Jr address the club at the Woman's Club Thursday night. Brandon would discuss the upcoming city charter election, with Ron Keeter, public affairs committee chairman, in charge of the program.
City clerk S A Crouse reports parking meter receipts for the week ending Wednesday totaling 166.19. The figure comes from the city office and reflects meters collected during the period.

Interment services for Starf Sgt Raymond C Thornburg 23 of Bessemer City killed in action in Italy June 2 1944 will be held Sunday at 2 oclock at Bethea Methodist church Bessemer City with burial in Bessemer City Memorial cemetery. Rev H F Leatherman pastor will officiate assisted by Rev Kelly Dix of Kings Mountain former pastor and Rev George Riddle former Army combat chaplain and pastor of First Presbyterian church of Cherryville. He served in the Army Air Force as a tail gunner. Pull military honors will be given the Bessemer City hero at his final rites. He is survived by his mother Mrs N M Thornburg of Bessemer City four brothers Eugene Thornburg of Belmont Lesig of Cherryville and Melvin Thornburg of Bessemer and two sisters Mrs wi and Mrs Louise Bell of City.
Members of Otis D. Green Post 155 American Legion heard talks at Chapel Hill school for Boys State during regular meeting at City Hall. Commander Harris announced Warren Reynolds on building committee for a WWII memorial. other post members named to NC Department convention in Asheville include delegates Batterree, Warlick, Gladden, Moss, Adetholdt, Saunders, Ward and alternates Herndon, Hull, Mauney, Harris, Carpenter. Gladden reported on the membership committee urging renewals.
Everette L Carlton of Winston-Salem will arrive Monday to assume duties as Kings Mountain High football coach pending board approval for pre season practice. A Lenoir Rhyne graduate with A certificate in physical education and history, he earlier attended Coach Carl Snavely’s clinic and played varsity football at Lenoir Rhyne and Duke. He served in the Marine Corps and assisted Lenoir Rhyne football last spring under Coach Clarence Stasavich.
James B. Simpson executive secretary of the Kings Mountain Merchants association will attend the Merchants Association Management Institute at Chapel Hill August 15 21. About 120 merchants association officials from 15 states are expected to attend. The Merchants Association office will remain open as usual during Simpson's absence.
Booth Gillespie announced flag golf tournaments at Kings Mountain Country Club this weekend with nine hole events on Saturday or Sunday. Prizes will be awarded for each day with three prizes per day. The organizers urged full member participation and flexible start times.
Police report a burglary at Belk's Department Store around 2 o'clock Monday night The thief pried the front door lock and escaped with underwear items including nylon slips panties and hose but left money in the cash drawer untouched Officers Roach and Davidson found the door check at 2 30 am noting the break in while the jewelry store nearby remained unentered and apparently untried by the thief
Seventeen cases were heard Monday afternoon in City Recorder's court at City Hall with Judge C C O'Farrell presiding. Several defendants faced charges including riding a female in a taxi front seat, assault on a female, public drunkenness, reckless driving, driving with improper brakes, posting signs within city limits, and driving without a license. Nine defendants were convicted of public drunkenness.
Kings Mountain textile leaders face a wage increase amid yarn market glut and slow product demand. Phenix Plant of Burlington Mills announced eight percent raise effective last Monday, Craftspun Yarns plans August 1 pay rise, while DuCourt Mills awaits New York confirmation. Production remains spotty and hesitating as mills reassess the unusual rise.
The city board of commissioners will hold a special session at City Hall Monday at 7 30 p m to hear public input on two proposed charters to be voted on in a August 28 special election. Charter A would adopt a city manager system with a mayor council role for the mayor, while Charter B keeps a mayor council framework. Citizens are urged to attend and suggest changes as officials seek to reflect voters will in the new charter.

The city board of commissioners met at City Hall for a routine session on Tuesday night. They studied recommendations for minor charter changes to be presented to citizens in a special election on August 28. A public hearing will outline the changes on Monday night and be published with any further edits. The board granted a beer license to Dorus Huffstetler and reviewed July department reports.
Inspection lane in Ings Mountain operations extend to noon Saturday with 631 cars inspected through Thursday morning as motorists rush to meet deadlines. Lane will not return until September 22 for a seven day stay. Officials urge all owners to complete inspections before the various late 1948 deadlines for 1936 to 1949 models. Two cars were condemned and removed from the roads this week.
McGill, former secretary of the Kings Mountain Merchants association, announced the opening of Alex's Golf Range on Gastonia Road a mile east of Kings Mountain. The 300 yard range is well lit for night play with top quality golf balls and clubs for both women and men. Golfers may use their own clubs, a concession stand will sell soft drinks and light refreshments, and arrangements are being made to help amateur golfers learn the game.
City officials say resurfacing is near finish this week. Sherrill Paving Company has completed double coating on Phenix and Church streets and applied single coats to Fulton Cansler Juniper Watterson West Gold Pine West Ridge and Cora streets. West Kings Mountain work wraps this weekend. crews will move to the east next week per city engineer E C Brandon Jr.
Polio cases rise to fourteen with two more reported in rural areas. Larry Surber, 10, of Shelby, fell ill while visiting his grandfather and was hospitalized.
