Tragic Baseball Trip Ends in Tangier Death

Sam James of Hillsdale died after a line drive struck him in the temple during a Mound City game in Tangier. He collapsed at home later that evening, with his wife and physician arriving after the funeral was arranged for Tuesday afternoon.

High School Notes From The Masquerade Night

Glen Ewbank was absent early in the week and Ella Cox missed classes due to mumps while preparations for the monthly exam Friday continue. The annual masquerade at the high school drew a large crowd with Homer Farr winning best masked, Miss Alice Hogan receiving the fruit plate, and H. H. Puckett winning for the windiest man.

September's Death Rate in Indiana Rises With School Opening

Indiana's September death rate for children rose 20 percent with schools opening. Diarrheal deaths numbered 351 of 424 child fatalities. Causes cited include water changes, confined classrooms, and decomposed lunches. Overall deaths averaged seven daily from violence, heavily driven by 57 interurban wrecks and 38 steam-road crises. State rate 12.4 versus 11.8 in 1909. total deaths 1,870. City rate 14.7, rural rate 10.8.
