Iowa railroad commissioners demanded current property values, but Rock Island lines declined to provide figures citing volatile conditions. The issue cited potential bankruptcy pressure and questions over salaries from top officials to section hands amid statewide scrutiny.
In a November report Gen Benet, chief of ordnance, says the bureau spent 1,507,882 last fiscal year and produced 41,108 rifles and carbines at the national armory. Garland has sent justice department appropriations estimates for the year ending June 30, 1800, about 200,000 higher, with increases for prisoner support 75,000 and district attorney fees 25,000.
Wisxtres Oct. 31 Justice Killam sustained the injunction won by the Canadian Pacific Railroad to stop the Northern Pacific from crossing CPR tracks. The ruling says consent from the Privy Council railway committee is needed, unlikely soon. The decision blocks Manitoba’s local process and CPR vows to press on against opposition.
In Wasminctos on November 2 the public debt shows principal 765,129,212 with interest bearing debt at 1,065,002,475 and total debt including non interest bearing items. Total cash in the treasury stands at 1,703,457,254, yielding a net debt figure of 1,211,782,005 after cash offset. Decreases noted from June 20 and October 1 reflect changes in debt and cash during the period.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen rejected federation with engineers and firemen at the Columbus convention. A union-wide arrangement may be possible between firemen and engineers, but a full federation hinges on brakemen joining. No actions remain until the St Paul convention in fall 1889.

The Wabash county Indiana Women s Christian Temperance Union faces a mass desertion. The seceders plan to contact the Iowa branch after the presidential election to form a new organization, signaling the union s impending disintegration foreshadowed in recent dispatches.
City of Mexico November 1 National railroad formally opened and passenger traffic inaugurated by the inaugural ten car train from San Louis to this city. On its arrival officers and guests were entertained at a grand banquet by citizens.

Captain Jacobson and one sailor from the Norwegian vessel Saga, wrecked near Cayman Island on September 17 during a Montevideo to Ship Island voyage, arrived Jamaica sick after two weeks on Cayman. They fought off 200 naked wreckers and subsisted on coconuts for two weeks before sailing to Jamaica in a twenty ton sloop. They reached Jamaica on October 7.
News from Montacvir near Mt Pleasant reports John Williams returning home to find his wife missing and the house broken into. A fresh grave was found at a spring along a dragged trail and the wife’s body was recovered with a fatal head wound. A Black man named Robert Horton was arrested on suspicion and jailed in Monroe County under guard to prevent a riot.
The royal commission on the Lake St. John railway contract amendment and boat grants to the city council begins its sittings in Montreal. A large number of prominent men are said to be implicated in the alleged wrongdoing.
Wisayiee Manitoba Nov 8 tension mounts over a railway dispute. Government massed forces from Dakota and Minnesota and aims to secure a crossing, while Canadian Pacific engines patrol the line. Militia arrived on a CP train, calming nerves as doctors and troops gather at the crossing for possible action. Superintendent Whyte to be arrested for alleged interference. The Manitoba Infantry School mobilizes, with hundreds en route to the war zone. The militia remains in camp awaiting developments.
A severe riot broke out in Middleton, Cork county, on November 2. A man in custody was rescued from the police by a mob. Officers were stoned and driven into a shop, where they faced a siege until reinforcements arrived. Several police were badly injured.
Pestottine Inspector Kidder reports the Streator post office was robbed last night of money and stamps. The amount stolen remains unknown.
Higasenam Alabama reports the escape of Charles Mintaker, an eight year prisoner at Pratt coal mines, sentenced for life for the Lyons murder in Lee county. Mintaker claimed Lyons’ widow hired him for $5000. The trial was sensational with Mrs Lyons acquitted. A large reward is posted. Also reported, an explosion at Lug’s rolling mill near Pittsview killed Puddler George Smith and injured two others. breaking furnace tap caused deadly steam and metal flow.
A disastrous morning fire in Green, O., destroyed the hotel, two printing offices, and twenty buildings. Natural gas escaping from pipes in several structures fed the flames. Losses cannot yet be estimated but will be large. No lives reported lost. cause unknown.
St. Louis anarchists plan a large demonstration for the Chicago execution anniversary. The Apollo theatre will stage a program including the play Innocents Condemned to Death, depicting McCormick’s Reaper Works, the Haymarket episode, and the Spies trial. Speeches precede the play. Knights of Labor districts may attend. receipts go to the executed anarchists’ families. Police have been alerted.
A string of burglaries in Franklin near Connersville, Indiana, Saturday night stole clothing jewelry and cash totaling about 1200 dollars. The bandits tried to move their haul to Connersville by freight last night but were spotted on the train. A bundle with several hundred dollars in stolen goods was left behind. Officers pursued the suspects who were recognized by residents.
