Remarkable Case of Imposture From Canterbury
A remarkable case of imposture is reported from Canterbury about twenty years ago Frances Wood and Panny Jordan of Clapham Hill Whitstable faked illness to gain sympathy and aid. She feigned paralysis to the point of meeting little use of limbs while a hidden black mark concealed by a cork disguise gave the illusion of disfigurement. Her mother remained unaware of the deception until later. The case drew relief from parochial authorities and Shavity Trustees and was later revisited in religious journals. The deceiver’s father served a short jail term.
