A Presbyterian minister’s family near Washington DC endures Civil War bombardment. In 1864 a shelling by New York regiments near Fort Smith wounds Charley Gayes, aged 12, as his mother and two sisters aid him. She binds his leg, carries him to safety, and later nurses him through recovery with song. The family remains staunch Union supporters despite threats and loss.
An item mixes a bear hunting tale with a frontier settler wife’s sharp wit. A hunter seeks a dozen bears while a woman recalls a bear with a club and a wary husband, ending in a funeral and a claim that the bear remains in the area seeking reinforcement. A separate note recounts a bottle message from a schooner’s mate drifting forty one days, returning to a Cape Breton lover via a bottle discovered in Nova Scotia.
