Prohibition Extremists Regarded By Iowa Readers
A Iowa audience criticizes Prohibition enforcement as overreach invading private homes and hindering lawful behavior. The piece condemns raids, blackmail by corrupt officers, and calls for balanced rules allowing legal liquor use and local manufacturing within state borders. It argues for restraint and fairness in laws governing saloons and private consumption.
Review of the Prohibitory Temperance Reform in Iowa
A Des Moines Register editorial defends limiting saloon power as a public good. It argues the prohibition movement aimed to close drinking places, not police private habits, and recalls 1882 popular support for closing saloons where crime and vice thrived. The piece rebuts critics who conflate public policy with personal liberty while urging adherence to original temperance aims.
