Avant 65 years old a well known Charleston figure for twenty years. He drank poison at a boarding house last night out of despondency over his wife’s death a year ago in Charleston. He left a note requesting to be left alone and a Confederate flag was found nearby.
The case of William Schirmer vs. the Atlantic Coast Line ended in a hung jury in Charleston, with a mistrial ordered after jurors failed to reach a verdict on the railroad mileage ticket rule. Schirmer testified he was denied boarding for lacking a regular ticket and offering mileage book fare. the conductor refused the mileage ticket. The judge refused to direct a verdict and the jury was discharged to await retrial.
Dr Henry Jowert, a well known dentist and former Ada Dental College dean, died on a trolley car near Pryor Street after a sudden collapse. Mrs Jewell and bystanders summoned aid but he died before medical help arrived. The accident occurred shortly after boarding the car for home on the Atlantic line.
The Presbyterian church led by Rev Geo M Wilcox preaches on the 2nd and 4th Sabbaths with morning service at 11 and evening at 8, plus Sabbath School at 10. The Buthel church holds preaching on the 24th and 40th Sabbaths with 3 0 p.m. service and a Fifth Sabbath at 11 a.m. Ebenezer preaches on the 1st Sabbath at 4 p.m. Richland holds services on the 4th and 3rd Sabbaths with morning at 11 80 a.m. Other English services Sunday at 11 o'clock, Sunday School at 9 45 a.m. Missionary and Ladies Aid meet on specified weeks. invitation extended to join. Also notes Fotey's Kidney Remedy claimed to cure kidney or bladder issues, backed by A. W. Bell.
A cashier at Canadian Express Company in Ontario reports a daylight robbery at Grand Trunk station. A package containing 814,156 was taken by two unknown men who overpowered him. The incident occurred within moments of entry and involved a bag or gas pistol. The money was destined for Toronto and St. Davids.
Notice announces Books of Registration for Walhalla South Carolina open now for qualified electors. Voters must present county Registration Certificate proof of tax payment and satisfy two years state residence and four months within town limits prior to election. Registration closes December 11, 1909 at Supervisor’s Office. George Seaborn is the Supervisor of Registration.
