Murder of Peter Beaufort in Sumter County Affects Two Women
The body of Peter Beaufort, a colored man, was found buried in a ditch near Hemberts in Sumter County. Edward Young, a colored boy, says Rosa Beaufort and Annette Kleby disputed with Beaufort last Tuesday and Kleby struck him with a stick, killing him. The boy alleges the women then forced him to hitch the corpse to a mule and drag it to the ditch, covering it with dirt. Both women were arrested and brought to jail as material witnesses. Also includes a local note about whooping cough remedy testimonials and local sales details.
