Dowie Dies in Chicago After Long Religious Career
John Alexander Dowie died this morning in Chicago with Judge Barnes and two attendants present. About 369 faithful followers attended his farewell services at Shiloh House parlor as Dowie had done each Sunday. Born in Scotland in 1847, he traveled to Australia, Melbourne, San Francisco, and finally Chicago where Zion City grew under his leadership. He had claimed biblical titles and faced multiple arrests for sick care ordinances, drawing strong devotion from adherents amid public controversy.
