Southern farmer urged to grow food crops to dodge cotton panics
Charles Barrett of the National Farmers Union warns Southern farmers to shift from cotton to homegrown food for man and beast. He cites 1907 panic lessons, urges diversified crops, stock, dairy, and poultry, to reduce debt and reliance on merchants, and to ensure year round food self sufficiency despite cotton profits.

South Carolina Adopts New Game Protection Acts
The General Assembly passed two acts establishing a Chief Game Warden and broad restrictions on hunting. Provisions criminalize shooting certain wildlife during defined periods, set fines up to 100 dollars, and impose jail terms. Confiscation and sale of illegally killed game fund the state’s Game Protection Fund. Securing the warden’s appointment, salary, duties, and reporting requirements are outlined, with the Audubon Society of South Carolina involved in nominating a candidate. The act takes effect immediately upon governor approval, exempting Berkeley County.
