Lieut Gen John M Schofield United States army retired died at 8 20 p m in St Augustine Fla after a Sunday cerebal hemorrhage He was 74 and the last surviving Civil War army commander His career spanned from entering West Point in 1849 to retirement in 1905 He served as secretary of war 1868 69 and commanded the army 1888 95 He was a longtime Loyal Legion member and twice its commander in chief.

Miss Maggie Swartz of Columbia died in a fire at Killians while aiding in extinguishing a petroleum box fire during men cutting a tram road right of way. An apron of sand ignited, clothing caught flame, and she perished after running from the blaze. Her body was found in underbrush nearby with shoes left behind.
