Pacific Coast Story Swept by Southern California Floods
Three men drowned and a boy may have died as heavy rain disrupted Southern California. Drowned were Louis Jones of Montecito, S Haven of Chicago, and Rico Rodriguez near Whittier. an unidentified boy was swept into the Los Angeles river. Ranchers along the Rio Hon do were marooned for ten miles near Montabello as rail lines including Southern Pacific and Santa Fe faced major disruption. Los Angeles County highway damage estimated at half a million. In Seattle winds reached 60 miles per hour, the highest since the weather bureau began.

Fire endangers 50 patients at state hospital in Columbia
Fire at the State Hospital for the Insane in Columbia endangered 50 negro patients when sparks from the main building ignited an adjacent wooden hospital structure. Dr. J W Babcock called the building a fire trap, but no injuries occurred as patients were removed and the blaze was controlled before city fire units arrived.

Respite granted to 1. B. Lemacks of Colleton county who was convicted of murder and sentenced to electrocution January 28. The reprieve extends to February 23, 1914 by Governor Bleage. Lemacks was convicted in the November term of court before Judge J. W. Bowman.

Savannah Ga Jan 25 Judge Emory Speer expressed satisfaction with the progress of a congressional committee investigation into charges of official misconduct against him. Auto Crash Brings Death Women Dies From Skull Fracture
Augusta Ga Jan 25 Dean C L Norman of North Augusta died at a city hospital from a skull fracture after Dr J T Whitlaws car skidded on a muddy road and overturned The crash left Mrs Norman and two Whitlaw children injured Mrs Norman who had married last December grasped a child to shield it as they were hurled 10 to 12 feet through the air Dr Whitlaw uninjured Mrs Whitlaw and her baby bruised The accident occurred while Dr Whitlaw drove and Mrs Norman never regained consciousness
