Through Route to the West Promised by Southern Railway
J M Culp, president of the Southern Railway, spoke at a Columbia banquet on the planned through line from Charleston via Columbia over the mountains to the Tennessee and Ohio valleys. He argued the project, delayed by natural obstacles and the Civil War, remains vital to South Carolina, linking interior markets with sea ports and expanding access to the Gulf and beyond. The speech asserted state pride in railway development and predicted growing prosperity with improved transportation and park development, Panama Canal completion, and broader railway access. He called for cooperation between South Carolina and railways to advance Southern resources and restore business confidence. The speaker noted no direct allusion to the old Blue Ridge survey but implied the railroad aims to use that legacy for future commerce.
