The wreck of the Maine lies about fourteen feet below harbor level at low tide. Water is being moved by pipes fixed at the ship, powered by a pump. Major Ferguson reports progress and expects to float the Maine within a fortnight. Visitors watch the operation from the harbor area, with no one admitted aboard for safety.
Col Leon tas1 oan Livingston, 79, longtime Georgia lawmaker and Confederate veteran, died in Washington after a long illness. He served in the National and Georgia legislatures and had recently been in Washington for medical care. He leaves a wife Olive and a daughter. native of Coyington Georgia, to be buried there.
William Welkely, an engineer from Battle Creek, Michigan, was killed today in a Grand Trunk locomotive cab near Chicago after a valve leak caused a fire and prevented escape. The driver tried to abandon the cabin but was enveloped by the blaze as the train slowed to a stop.

Obituary notes the death of Hon. John Bam Verner at his Columbia home yesterday afternoon at 2 40 o clock. A former Oconee County resident, he moved to the capital city with his family and left a large legacy in state politics. Survived by six children and multiple siblings, Verner was a prominent lawyer, former Attorney General, and longtime Richland County master. He served in the Presbyterian church as an elder and was a key figure in South Carolina’s Reconstruction era politics.
In Anderson on Feb 10 Mrs J Fretwell and Miss Sadie Fretwell were injured when their large car collided with a streetcar. Mrs Fretwell and her infant grandson were thrown onto the brick pavement, Miss Fretwell was thrown against the windshield and injured. The car was badly damaged and rendered inoperable. The report notes medical treatment and references Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for sale locally.
Sue Hien and Annie Wanter served as hostesses for a club gathering described through garbled notes titled How the Club Was Marmed. Col John Peyre Thomas a respected elder statesman and Civil War veteran died this morning at his son John Thomas’s home in Berkeley county South Carolina. A native of Saint John’s parish he served in the state legislature before Reconstruction and was noted for his bold stand against radical corruption.
Guilt confessed by Joeaulatro Mack and an 11 year old, both arrested by Atlantic Coast agents at Whites Hall. They are accused of throwing a switch that caused the Coast Line vestibule passenger train No 88 wreck. The younger boy gave the reason for the act. No one died in the wreck as the train was moving slowly past the switch. In another incident three children burned to death near Peoria, with farmhand Janne Smith and one more adult fatally burned in a Hew Hickman house fire that devastated the home. Smith had been in charge of the children. A breakfast toast flare up and explosion led to the blaze. Smith tried to save the children as he burned.
